My dishwasher just got super loud. I think the motor is about to die.
Recommendations on new dishwasher make, model and installer experiences would be appreciated!
Just grrrrr . . . it was the fridge that I wanted to replace, not the dishwasher!

Consumers Reports just came out with this and we were looking at it the other night.
For dishwashers, the Bosch Ascenta SHX3AR75UC is considered their best buy recommendation. It had a score of 81 and is priced around $700. Top of the list is KitchenAid KDTM354DSS at $1080 and a score of 86. Kenmore fills the next 2 slots.
The run time of the first 3 dishwashers on the list (the Bosch is 4) is from 125-145 minutes.

I had a Bosch and loved it. In the new house I matched the GE Café appliances and the dishwasher is also quite good. Check prices at Lowes or Home Depot, they will also, for a price, take care of hiring the installer and taking away the old dishwasher.

When the old Maytag went to appliance hell, I got a Bosch from Home Depot. I don't remember the model but we love it! Incredibly quiet, a good variety of settings for whatever way you live and wash dishes, interior configuration can be switched around if you have loads of big pots instead of plates and bowls, quick cycle for the OMG moments when company is coming and you forget to run it last night . I think it was around $600-$700 plus install.

What do you have now? Don't buy it again. It did last like 10 years, so not awful. But either I didn't buy the model I intended or the food chopper thing really didn't work well. I think going down to one load a week for a couple years & then suddenly going back to a load a day (visitors) did it in. I just thank all the powers that be that the dishwasher was invented And I am not sure how long it might have been making this horrible noise. Being the baddy I am, I usually flip on the dishwasher right before I leave the house, so it might have been doing this for a while and I just didn't know

Our dishwasher is on its last legs, so we've been keeping an eye on what's supposed to be good. The dishwasher we have is too short for our plates, so these all have to be washed by hand. Next time we buy a dishwasher, we're taking the plates to the store with us!!
ETA: We did make one really important discovery recently though. Dishes weren't getting clean, and it turns out that we need to run the hot water tap in the sink to get hot water running up to the dishwasher before turning it on. Made a world of difference.
Too bad that the dish racks are rusting through. TD keeps repairing them, they keep rusting. Soon, they will be more repair than dish rack!

I just bought a Maytag dishwasher (MDB4949SDM), and it's really quiet and has stainless steel tub. It also has great online reviews, and I didn't want to spend more than about $500 on a dishwasher. I know people who either love or hate Bosch. I think it has something to do with it using the european method for drying or the american method for drying.
I think most dishwashers these days are pretty quiet. I just looked for ones that had reviews that indicated that they consistently got dishes clean.

Heads up on the Bosch --- My dad and K replaced the dead dishwasher with one and when it is done it does a high tone beep until you open the damn thing. They ordered the best one on CR and the thing drives me up a wall -- it is fairly quiet but if you are doing dishes at night I don't know if the beep would disturb you or not.
Of course dad can't hear it so if you have sorta bad hearing don't worry about it. --- Unless you have a dog --- it could bother the dog.

One thing you might consider is whether something hard has gotten down into the pump impeller. A small bone, that missing piece of silverware, part of a glass that got broken? Especially considering that you might have had help from your guests filling the dishwasher. On some dishwashers you can lift off the lower spray bar and then lift off or take out a couple of screws and remove the cover for the pump inlet. And find interesting things in the bottom of the dishwasher.

I don't remember how DH did it but I'm sure it's in the manual.

I was never too happy with the cleaning ability of my GE dishwasher. It's about 10 years old now, and I've started shopping to replace it.
The helpful salesman at Home Depot told me all dishwashers, including Bosch, are crap these days.

And I love dishwashers as much as the next person but I am stunned that it can take 2 hours to do what I can do by hand in a few minutes. The energy and water use almost seems to defeat the purpose.
