Bay Area, 2 kids under three
I'm a STEM degree working in pharmaceutical R&D. Base salary is about $140k, with another ~$40k in bonus and stock options most years.
DH is an assistant professor (STEM) at a state university and makes ~$60k. Most definitely a labor of love, academia.

Civil Engineer, small city in the Midwest, $77k a year. Dh is a SAHD to 2 kids.
I just moved here and it is a great place. The job is a big raise in salary (although similar in terms of total compensation). Cost of living is low, schools are awesome, and it is a nice quality of life for us.

Our big discussion these days is about the best time to start taking Social Security. I'm 62 in August and would get @ $1400 month. TAke it and invest it? Or wait until 66 for full retirement age? Any thoughts from you experts out there?
We won't take anything from our retirement accounts until RMD kicks in.
We plan to take ours at 62 because we can live on the SS and pension and leave most of the retirement accounts untouched or with a small draw down. We didn't want to take out a lot of money from the accounts the first few years. Everyone's case is different, so there is no one size fits all advise.

I retired 3 weeks ago. I have 2 pensions and SS and make $40k a year without touching my 401k or Roths. I live in So. Cal Congratulations!
You should start a thread about how you did it and how you survive on $40k/yr in So. CA
Enquiring minds gotta know!

Both DH and I work in public education. Technically, I'll be unemployed as of July 1. DH makes ~$120K/year + health insurance. I was making ~$82K/year. I am considering going into the private sector or returning to a teaching contract. That'll be ~$50K/year. We live in the PNW in a MCOLA.

Since its an anonymous board, figured we could compare notes. Also hoping this may help cheer me up. (potential career paths & what people live on in certain areas)
ETA- by what do you make? I meant how much money
ETA 2- also if you are part of a family / team...what does your partner do & how much do they make? (and size of family?) ETA 3- hopefully people don't take the "cheer me up" part the wrong way. Just happy to see what it is possible to make it on, so I have some ideas as I transition from the military. (I am a tremendous worry wart). 1- Director of data stuff & things (not official title :-) ) - $125 + ~ 25k bonus (+ benefits, 401k match, etc.). Probably underpaid a bit, but I have a <10min commute which is a huge plus in our area. 2- DW also does data stuff ( as a Sr. Manager) for a very well known company- she is at ~$130k + ~ $100k/yr worth of bonus + stock grants. We live in a suburb of Boston (fairly HCOL area), currently just the 2 of us but with an addition on the way (eta 5mo from now).

DH works part time. Our total gross I think was maybe 75K last year. I dunno. I would have to actually look at our tax return beyond signing it.
We have three kids. We will have kids at home for a long time, because I'm wired such that I can't have kids close together in age.
We live in a MCOLA in the midwest, but not the mythical cheap midwest where 100K gets you a nice house. Housing and daycare being closer to a HCOLA. DH works part time, because we actually come out ahead. If he worked full time, I don't think we could have afforded to have the peanut.

Engineer/Surveyor in the Circle City (Indianapolis).
And I'll tell you the same thing I told my kids when they used to ask how much my wife and I make: "Enough to take care of your every need - and a few of your wants."

May continue with 4-5 more classes so that I can sit for the CPA exam. Currently, I'm just doing 2 Coursera classes as i couldnt get into the 2 classes I was considering at the brick-n-mortar colleges.

Me: Manufacturing Engineer $57,000 and thinking of looking for a new position or/and company. The money I made isn't the best for my skills but I like the company I'm at. So its a struggle to decide. I might go back for my Masters. SDH: Boat builder $45,000 The job is hard on his body and I wish he would start training to do something else with the skills he has (he could easily transition into something in sales, purchasing, or design) before he is disabled.
MCL - Pacific Northwest
We support a family of 6 now. It used to be 7 but DS1 graduated college, got a great job, and moved on. I have one rental apartment and would like to remodel and add another one.

Independent claims adjusting company 3. Corporate web-based training consulting company (spouse) Average of last three years (AGI) is just shy of $360- though the adjusting is already at 90 before the massive Florida hurricane which will hit later this year, so I'm expecting to hit 500 this year for the first time. Florida and loving it. Literally ANYONE can do ANYTHING I've done. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I know an opportunity when I see one, I act without fear. I'm also pretty lazy- that is not to say that I shy away from work, but I work so I don't have to work. And I do things that interest me, so if I have to work- and we all do- I'm at least not bored out of my mind and hating life.

I think hubbies will be less this year, I was looking at his year to date yesterday. He gets overtime for anything over 60 hours a week but he said has been hardly any this year, he is guaranteed pay of 60 hours per week. A few hours of overtime really ramps up the total so I think its going to be way less this year. That's ok we are still saving and that's all that matters to us. Once you get all DD's applications settled and submitted; you should start working on your husbands business name/license for when he is back I have the feeling that "slowing down" and being retired for the two of you will still mean you do more than the average person!! I think a couple months of getting your land & machines/RVs sorted out and he'll be looking for stuff to do! He would be an awesome local handyman!
