About a month ago this woman who lives two doors down (notice lack of descriptive adjective such as "neighbor" or "friend") said she hoped we were hit with a hail storm so she could get a new roof from her insurance. And yesterday-one week to the day after the historic flooding that left many dead and many more with damaged homes, some in our immediate area-she said she hated that the rain had stopped because the rain kept the temps cooler and her electric bill lower. My husband says I don't exercise a lot of restraint but he is wrong! I replied that I would rather be hot than have my home flooded, got in my car and drove away. And I didn't even drive away over her! Hey, I ain't no saint and I believe self-interest is part of the human psyche but really ?? Thanks for listening.

I thought you're just supposed to say "bless your heart".

Do you live in Maryland? I'm remembering a certain former poster who seemed elated that her husband made money on natural disasters...

Maryland hasn't had any deaths from flooding recently.

I think most people just don't connect the dots. It is definitely being self-centered, but they don't wish "bad" on other people. They just don't see how it all connects.
When I did Saturday School, I used to tell my students, "Put me out of a job, please!"

Maybe she was trying to be funny?
I make inappropriate jokes and say the wrong thing all the time when something 'real' gets close. A lot of people think I am a total asshole. (I won't dispute it.)

In 2011 our area had a bunch of tornados, including one that took the top off my house. The nearby small city didn't get a direct hit but had a lot of power lines down, cable and cell phone outages, etc. Many suburban areas (like ours) had extensive damage and several fatalities.
In driving around the next day trying to find tarps to cover over the place where half our roof used to be, we were listening to a local talk radio station and a woman called in to bitch that she had missed the final episode of one of those talent shows - Dancing with the Stars or American Idol or whatever - because her cable was out. It had now been out for almost 24 hours and she was outraged - OUTRAGED!! that the cable company was taking such a long time to repair her service.
The talk show host, who had spent the whole morning passing along announcements about where community shelters had been established, how to contact the Red Cross, where volunteers could assemble to help clean up debris, etc, hung up on her and then spent the next 10 minutes on a raging rant about her.
Seriously, some people think no further than the ends of their noses. Life is all about them.

I would have pointed out the fact that she should be happy she is alive to complain about the heat because the people killed by the flood weren't so lucky. I also live in an area that saw a lot of flooding and news about the missing and the dead was talked about constantly. She sounds like a complete jackass. I know some people say things without thinking (I am guilty as well) but seriously...

My uncle is a very "get something for nothing" kind of person. I hate that. Don't get me wrong. I'm quite enamored with myself and my little world revolves around me, but I earned everything I have and those who don't are not someone I want to be around.

My MIL is very much like this too, yet very conservative at the same time. The cognitive dissonance when she talks politics sometimes is unreal.

Isn't this why the show Seinfeld was so funny?
(Or not funny, if you found watching mean spirited self centered people interact to be depressing and not funny.)

Thanks all for letting me vent on this person. We are a tight-knit 'hood here so she sort of sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb. I don't know if it's part of aging, but I am a whole lot less tolerant of a-holes than I used to be. Myself included.
