A Texas cop who had to tell a teenager his parents died shows up to boy's graduationA Texas teen was home alone, a week before graduation, when a police officer arrived to tell him his parents had died. Orange, Tex. police officer Eric Ellison told Kazzie Portie, 18 and the youngest of five, that his parents - Riley and Emily Portie, were struck and killed by a drunk driver. The teen said he didn’t know what to do, he was supposed to graduate from Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School at the end of the week, Buzzfeed reported. “I said, ‘You are going to walk!’” Ellison told BuzzFeed News. “Your mom and dad will have front-row seats looking down from heaven, and I’ll stand in their place. I’ve got your back.” Ellison went to his daughter’s graduation on May 29, and kept his promise and showed up, in uniform, to Portie’s graduation the next day. “I just did what I would want someone to do if I had left my girls early,” Ellison said on Facebook. Rest of story here: A Texas cop who had to tell a teenager his parents died shows up to boy's graduationA very thoughtful and caring police officer. Kudos.

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

There are plenty of decent, hard-working officers out there. The media usually only reports on the bad ones.
What a wonderful thing to do! That young man will always remember this.

What a wonderful thing to do! Yes, there are hundreds and hundreds of great cops out there - many doing acts of kindness on a daily basis.
If only the media would focus on THOSE stories and stories such as this one.

If a cop does an act of kindness or gets shot on the job, he's just doing his job and he does not deserve recognition. He gets paid to do that!
But then when a cop shoots back defending himself or makes a mistake and someone gets hurth then that's police brutality. And THAT is newsworthy!

That is a heartwarming story. I am glad that the officer and school community cared for this student & his family tragedy.

Crap now I'm crying at work. What a nice story.
Cops have a hard job. They have to deal with people who are often not at their best - drunks, or the mentally ill - and then there are the ones who are flat out criminal. Easy to get burned out and not care anymore, glad this guy still does.
