Ted Cruz voted against disaster relief in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, so his history is that he disapproves it for big things too, as long as they don't affect Texas.

Reminds me of the guy who was anti-Obamacare and refused to buy insurance on the exchange (because Obamacare was anti-American) - until he got sick, and now needs a chunk of money for eye surgery so he won't go blind and he wants, you guessed it, Obamacare to pick up the bill. Since he doesn't have insurance (because he refused to buy it on the exchange) the government is NOT picking up the bill, and his wife is now whining that Obamacare doesn't work because her husband is the poster child for someone who actually needs Obamacare and it isn't helping him. I think they thought Obamacare was free money for poor people, which they were against, until they needed it, and now they want it, and they are pissed they can't get it. Guy is on one of those crowd funding sites, for anyone who wants to subsidize his crappy decision not to get insurance.

I think the Tea Party does not want to pay for big government and is willing to do without it if that were the case. Very few people want to pay for something and not have it available for them. If you and your spouse argued about insurance and he/she bought it, would you turn down the payout if tragedy happened? Or would you say that since you payed the bill you want the benefit?

If you and your spouse argued about insurance and he/she bought it, would you turn down the payout if tragedy happened? Or would you say that since you payed the bill you want the benefit? but surely you can see the folly in that attitude, right? and how it really doesn't make sense. consider life insurance, for a moment. actually, ANY form of insurance comes with it the possibility that you will never be able to use it: earthquake, catastrophic health, long term care, etc. and then there are things like the military. some people think that they are useful all of the time, others think that they are NEVER useful (or at least that standing armies of military personnel are not useful). courts? has the court ever protected you, or just been there to make sure you paid your tickets and taxes? but here is the thing: when you need disaster relief, or a spouse dies and you can't pay the mortgage except by using his or her social security benefits, or heaven forbid we should have an enemy that actually attacks us, or some idiot breaks into your house, and you can't discover who it is, you will be GLAD that you paid for it. that is how insurance works, and that is how living in a free society works. that is the bond that draws us together as a nation and forms consent. i really have trouble relating to people who think that nations should be like McDonalds- where you ONLY have to pay for stuff that you want to pay for, and none of what anyone else in the nation wants. i can't imagine a nation that could function well whose citizens were being that selfish and short sighted.
