I know we had a thread about what American woman might appear on the twenty dollar bill, if the Treasury depatment decided to do it. Well, the results are in. I know some felt it should be kept to dead Presidents I know many felt a woman is long over due. The vote was an internet poll, which even here Moonbeam refuses to allow due various reasons www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/harriet-tubman-may-have-just-been-voted-into-your-wallet/ar-BBjGmVVLast night on our local news they had a feel good segment announcing the results. They were in a 99% white elementary classroom when the results were announced. The children erupted into a cheer with the announcement. Nothing wrong with that. BUT, do we want elementary class children determining the fate of our money? I have a hunch the vote was fixed by the teachers stuffing the virtual ballot box. Incidently Eleanor Roosevelt came is a dismal second. Thoughts?

I'm curious why you think mostly white elementary students wouldn't vote to have a black woman on our money, and have concluded that the teachers must have cheated for Tubman to win?

Announcing the results in a classroom, regardless of the color of the students' skin, is not the same as school children voting who's picture is on the $20 bill. Your link said nothing about the students voting on the picture. Do you have any source claiming it was only students who could vote because I was one of the thousands who voted and it has been quite some time since I was an elementary school student.

Your link didn't mention elementary school at all, just this organization ran a non-binding poll on the Internet and Tubman won narrowly over Eleanor Roosevelt. Nothing to worry about, the grownup elementary school kids, i.e. Congress, will likely decide whether anything happens or not.

Congress doesn't decide.
From the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing FAQ:

Well I did put 'likely' because I didn't know. My point was more that if any elementary schoolers were involved in the process they would be grown up government ones.

Opt4FT. I wasn't being critical. I knew your point. I thought the same thing last night when I saw that on the news. These kids didn't know any of the potential candidates. So I did have to look up who decides. I did think it was Congress. Heck they can't agree on what day it is anymore.

Ken. You think the Treasury by itself could decide to change to $25 bills with Oscar the Grouch on them? (IDK, just curious. )

I'd prefer Rosa Parks but no one asked me.

I think Harriet Tubman is a great choice.

It was an emoticon when I clicked create post, and then it was -hug-Ken. I did not know that was Korean.

BTW I think it was a good choice, but a tough choice with all the deserving women mentioned.

I think the decision should be given over to the folks at "National Lampoon". They would certainly be able to come up with something easily associated with "funny money" Since American dollars will never ever be associated with things in the black....the currency should be "red" and feature a "redhead".

I stuck in a space and put the emoticon back in. I love what you see is what you might not get.

As far as I know, it is not Korean-but with the hyphens and at first glance, it looked Korean to me.

While in Vietnam in the Army we had MPC-Military payment certificates. They had various designs on the paper money. One had a caracticure of an astraunaut, in his space suit if I remember correctly. No dead Presidents.
No greenbacks were allowed due to monetary black market of currencies.

Almost everyone has more attractive money than we do.
I read someplace that the 'greenback' is such a well known international standard that the treasury department is unwilling to deviate much from the size and color of the current bills.
Don't know if that's the real reason or we're just hopelessly boring and unimaginative
Actually, it can't be that we're boring, we have some awesome stamps - maybe it's just the treasury department that's boring.....

I think we should just do away with paper money... According to "Back to the Future II" aren't we supposed to be paying for everything with our thumbprints now, anyway?

While appreciating the nice Dutch bills....
I like our money boring and staid. It also helps that those boring greenbacks are still valid and the Dutch guilders were taken out of use on 01/01/99 --- you had one or two years after that to convert your money to Euros I believe, but I wasn't living there at the time so I'm not quite sure about the time given ETA Euro was adopted in '99, but only tsken into use 3 years later.
