www.cbsnews.com/videos/michelle-obama-opens-up-on-race-in-graduation-speech/What happened to this Presidency and the liberal left thoughts of better race relations for America with President Obama in office? The President has shown misstep after misstep with handling any race relationship discussion. Mrs. Obama from before his election has displayed an abysmal ability to talk about race, and continues to do so. Jimmy Carter's four years in office is looking better every day.

I do not know what Coulter was referring to as far a "free" museums, but I do not know what Michelle was talking about "museums" either. Just thought there was some good comments in the early part of the discussion concerning the "Great Society" fiasco, plus, Michelle's stance on racism, which shows her to be the racist that she is. Plus, since I had not had any comments on my original post, I knew someone would finally comment since I added Coulter's response

Alternatively, does ignoring the racist that still exist make it disappear? If we just ignore it, then it will go away?

nope. But to still blame whitey is racist. I don't see blaming whitey. I see her acknowledging that they are still going to run into racism even today (which is absolutely true) & telling them they have to rise above those challenges.

Plus, since I had not had any comments on my original post, I knew someone would finally comment since I added Coulter's response i don't know that any of those facts are right. i would certainly not presume that, given the sources. their claim was that "illegitimate births" went from 20% to 70% in the black community in the last (50) years. i would very much like to see the evidence of that. but also, i don't think it is fair to make that comparison without a "control group"- so i would like to know how different this has been in the WHITE COMMUNITY, or the LATINO COMMUNITY. not a lot of information on that in the clip, and none expected, candidly. they were trying to make a point, and i am fairly certain more information would take it out of focus.

of course she is. but it is just so much fun to make her out to be some sort of Marxist revolutionary, don't you know? a sort of Che Gueverra (sic) with a process.

Didn't some museum just kick out a school of black kids due to them running wild in the museum? Plus told the school they can't bring another group-ever. I'm wondering if the teachers/chaperones didn't discuss proper behavior at the museum before going? Every time my kids went on a field trip, there was a huge discussion as well as a "contract" everyone had to sign including a parent. The time I took a group to sea world, there was a designated group of parents who baby sat the ones who chose to not behave. I know because some girls in DD's group ran off from the person in charge of her group and they ended up sitting with the chaperones and not seeing sea world. Fortunately, DD behaved and didn't get punished with the rest.

White teens can be pretty nasty too. Sequoyah High School in Madisonville, Tennessee is 93% white (there are a total of 70 non-white students in the school (out of a total enrollment of 1087). One hundred students were banned from graduation ceremony after a prank went way too far. A sheriff's deputy was fired for lying after he confessed to letting the students into the school building and the school principal is on indefinite suspension. Just one of several hallways of the school: Tennessee high school principal suspended, 100 students banned from graduation for senior prank

1) I never thought race relations would improve because Obama became President. I in fact predicted they would get worse.
2) Skimmed the speech and it seemed reasonable.

I hadn't bothered with your thread before but just got back in from a Ffood breakfast...Burger King with their 2/1 breakfast sandwich and sat in parking lot eating and reading paper and had on NPR..and guess what was being discussed and those who were listening said in the call in portion of the show..all about Michelle and her graduation speech... The gist of the callers...some felt it was a terrible speech...how dare she speak so openly about problems as she grew up and what she faced and tell the graduates what they may face..Speech should be up lifting and yadda, yadda..and then so many..and many, most identified themselves as white...applauded her for being honest...being positive with the graduates as to how they can make a difference but also warning of the pitfalls that they will face and many of those pitfalls will be what she facved..relating to their race.. Now how is that a bad speech I ask...it is honest ..it is a reality...As one caller said people listen to what she says but don't hear what she is saying... To many conservatives IMHO are just not happy that there is a person of color in that chair in Washington..Not saying they are fire breathing raciest..They would never consider clan membership in the past or join those mobs who...but unhappy about who is sitting in that chair now..oh yeah..and if they say No, No..not me it's the man and his policies ..yadda, yadda...they LIE. Michelle address at a one of the oldest most prestigouse Black colleges ..{Is it a college or a University..not sure myself..} in the country ..addressing mostly Black graduates..her speech was right on...she spoke uplifting and positive and also honestly and truthfully about what these young people will be facing.. Just heard a survey done..damn forgot by who the sponsor was but a prestigouse group..said that many fortune 500 companies would opt to hire a white individual with a minor record..{police} rather then a person of color with a unblemished one..will have to do some googling on that when I have time later today...

a new presidential historians poll came out this year. unsurprisingly, only one newspaper covered it (NYT).
in it, Clinton broke the top 10 for the first time, and Obama fell to 18th. Reagan fell to 11th.
W was ranked 9th worst. i disagree slightly, here. i think he is 8th worst (i think Hoover was a better president than W).
edit: Carter came in dead center between Bush and Obama, which i think is about right, as well.

What an incredibly odd article. I read the transcript Tenn posted and it seemed to me she was merely commenting on her experience and what she expected it might feel to other children who come from economically disadvantaged circumstances. Or simply feel they aren't supposed to be there for whatever reason.
To make that speech into some odd comment about racism says way more about the author than it does Michelle Obama.

We have context. We know that Michelle Obama is a very self-focused, chip-on-her shoulder, angry black liberation theology, radical. We know she and Barrack sat in Rev. Wright's cult for 22 years, we know she said that for the first time in her adult life she was proud of her country and hope was making a comeback when her husband was elected. This is revealing. How about the "Miracle on Ice" in 1980? Or for some more substantive moments, how about the fall of the Berlin Wall comes to mind as a pivotal moment in history owing almost entirely to the leadership of the United States of America. Of course there are dozens- even hundreds of other huge moments worthy of pride in this country.

In short- it's not an "odd comment" it's actually very consistent with who this bitter, angry woman is at heart.

And it does seem there are some very bitter conservatives who want to discuss race and pretend they are racially blind. Its not working. Their anger and their views are showing.
