www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/colorado-restaurant-plans-hold-white-appreciation-day-n355901
"On June 11th, what we plan on doing is 'White Appreciation Day.' And basically on that day, all white people would get 10 percent off," Edgar Antillon, owner of Rubbin' Buttz BBQ and Country Cafe in Milliken, Colorado, told NBC affiliate KUSA.
The idea for "White Appreciation Day" was originally a joke, but Antillon decided to turn it into a real deal, hanging up a sign at Rubbin Buttz that reads "White Appreciation Day! June 11th. Because all Americans should be celebrated."
Do these small business owners ever learn? Don't get involved with politics.
White appreciation day is just like Hollywood and the endless awards ceremonies they give themselves. It is the winners jerking each other off.

I will first grant that most businesses doing something like this probably have not thought enough about the idea and its potential repercussions. Does it make a difference to anyone that this is "a first-generation American born to Mexican parents" putting on this promotion? For me at least, that would ameliorate any possible racist connotation since he is in fact making a promotion to benefit a race different from his own. Safest way to do something like this is to make and post a calendar in advance:
White Appreciation Day - whatever day Black Appreciation Day - some other day Hispanic Appreciation Day - whatever other day
If there are any other sizable minority groups in the area, go ahead and give them one too. Maybe decorate for the day. It would certainly be closer to his idea that we are all American and should all be celebrated.

Does that mean they can't be appreciated?

The only place I am really ghostly white is where my body doesn't see the sun for months at at time...having said that, white appreciation day? Come on...I'm appreciated by all those who I appreciate.
Time to be color blind and all that stuff. But, if you are a jerk... black, white, brown...you're a jerk. And there are, unfortunately, more jerks per capita, in some communities. But that is an entirely different conversation.

I understand that. But when the owner himself differentiated between the two (not to mention things like census forms doing the same) I think it would be pretty easily understood the difference.

There is more racism in Mexico than probably anywhere in the world. In Mexico, under 10 per cent of their population is Caucasian, and they controls virtually everything in that country. They are despised by the natives..
The Mexicans who cross the border are brown, short and the decendans of native Mexican tribes. In a few years there will be more Mexicans in our country than in Mexico. In 50-75 years, this will be a Mexican country.
Hey...but companies want cheap labor.
Mexican Latinos make up more than two thirds of all Latinos in the United States, according to a new Pew Hispanic report.
Of the 51.9 million Latinos living in the United States in 2011, more than 33.5 million trace their family back to Mexico.

And if they live in Morgan Hill CA, they think they still do. That's where a kid can be suspended for wearing red / white / blue on May 5th

It would certainly be closer to his idea that we are all American and should all be celebrated. It would be fine if that was the plan, but apparently the reasoning is because Black History month and Hispanic Heritage month are month long events, so apparently the way to balance that out is to have one day of 10% discounts for white people.

I think there ought to be a special day celebrating taxpayers to thank them for working so others don't have to!
