Before kids, we used to do stuff regularly that would inevitably cost money. After kids, doing stuff takes a back seat to getting some rest, which is generally free. I think this depends on the kid's temperment and what you did before you became parents. We used to travel, eat out a lot, went to shows, occasional movies. When the babies came around, we wanted to catch up on sleep, traveling and doing stuff became an ordeal. Holding off on major travel until the youngest is at least 3, and probably even older. He can be a pita. We tried camping in the backyard with him last summer, and the tent freaked him out. The oldest was a great traveller until he turned 2, but all the crap we brought along still made it too difficult to do much of it even then. Plus, we're old. We just don't have the extra energy to do travel + deal with kids at the same time. It just makes it not very much fun at all. We can't wait until they get old enough to be less of a burden when we try to go somewhere fun. At least potty trained.
