The thread asking if you were living your dream made me think about things you want to do, but looking forward instead of looking back. What would you like to do, buy, accomplish, etc., before you kick the proverbial bucket? I'll go first. I would like to travel to Europe, especially London and the UK in general. I would like to write a book. About the book, I am trying, been trying for a while, but so far no results. The other dream, traveling to London, maybe will became a reality next year. I know you are supposed to adjust your withholdings so you don't get a big refund, but a big refund this year allowed me to pay off my car loan on February 28th. If everything goes according to my master plan, next year the tax refund will pay for the trip. Believe me, if I get the money in my paychecks instead of all together as a big sum, it will be gone quickly in little emergencies and expenses here and there. So, what about you? What's in your bucket list and what are you doing to achieve those dreams?

Ava, I am FAR older than you (51). Good for you for nourishing your soul as well as your bank accounts. I'm sure you will get there!

I would love to travel to Europe and the UK for a summer. I seriously doubt it will ever happen.

I do have a bucket list. Things on it that I've already done include seeing the Egyptian pyramids and the Great Wall. Still on the list is diving or snorkling the Great Barrier Reef. Seeing my grandson graduate from college, holding a great-grandbaby (but not for a while), and taking a train trip from Moscow to Vladivostok.

See all 50 states. Retire healthy and wealthy at a relatively young age. Write a book. Visit Australia. Attend the other 3 Grand Slam Tennis matches; I've been to the US Open. Visit a caribbean island by myself. Downsize my home.

Saphhire, some of your bucket list items are eerily similar to mine! The similar ones are visit all 50 states (8 to go!), retire healthy/wealthy (not sure what age yet as I like working and at 29, I've got a long way to go), visit Australia and New Zealand, visit all 4 tennis Grand Slam tourneys (ditto on having only been to the US Open), and visit the South American continent. Also on my list: learn to scuba dive visit Napa Valley sign and seal engineering plans just once (have my PE license, but I've never used it) see Machu Pichu visit Las Vegas (should happen in May - I've never been, and want to see it just once) Apparently I like to travel.

Same answer. I need 3.5 million so that I can retire. We'll keep paying the mortgage on the house here, and I'll spend half the year travelling, once the kids finish school and get kicked out. Ok, so not quite the same answer... but pretty much. Darn kids are obnoxious sometimes. ETA - Grrr... dang wife says this wasn't a bucket list, which I get. However, most of the stuff on my bucket list would require a fair amount of time and freedom (read money), so it's easier to say I need a few million and to be retired than list everything. The big one would be sailing around the world. I figure that takes two years easy, maybe more depending on how much travelling you combine it with at the places you stop. I have a huge list of places I'd like to visit.

I want to travel internationally, but I have yet to get a passport. I want to visit the Louvre Museum, Egypt, and Rome. I want to learn how to drive a manual transmission and go to racing school. I have a few notebooks with book ideas, but haven't seriously started writing anything. And I want to go on a cross-country road trip.

tcu -- we do seem to have the travel bug. Napa Vallely is on my list as well. I'm scheduled to knock off 3 more states this summer -- ND, WY, NE, then I'll have 14 more to go. Australia is the last continent that I want to visit; I will have stepped on 6 continents. I don't like the cold so Antarctica is not on my list. Enjoy Vegas!

May I ask why you want to take that trip? Lena It's actually part of a dream trip I want to take - around the world by train. I love train travel and we always try to incorporate a long train trip when we travel. In Egypt we took the train from Cairo to Luxor (16 hrs). In China we went by train from Lanjhou to Lhasa (23 hrs). In developing countries, first class train travel is very reasonably priced. The pace is slower and you see so much more of the country. Anyway, what I want to do is take the train to Vancouver, BC, then across Canada then fly to Europe (probably London) and go by train to St Petersburg, then Moscow, then Vladivostok. Then take the ferry to Japan and fly home. I figure it will take 6-8 weeks (we'd stop and spend time in places we like along the way) , so we can't do it as long as our dogs are with us (they are 10 and 14) and we would not want to board them that long. But it's on my bucket list....

GG,
Things might have changed a lot since I left, but 1 - I would be super careful traveling by train in Russia, 2 - I wouldn't go during certain times of year to Vladivostok and 3 - unless it changed drastically, trains in Russia are not that comfortable to be spending weeks and weeks in them. By no means, I am trying to discourage you from the trip, just do your homework. There are very little "rules" in that country, so just be aware of that.

See a Shakespeare play in the Globe theater in London I did this - it is pretty awesome. Make sure you go during a time when they are holding outdoor performances though - I think it is something like May-September/October. I have a large bucket list, which includes visiting all 50 states and all 7 continents. I love to travel as well, so most of my items have to do with that. Now if I could just get to travel - it has been 6 years since I have been out of the country!

I have been thinking a lot about My Bucket List lately. Not sure why. I haven't actually written it down, but in my head I see:
Travel - I would like to see London, Ireland, Greece, Australia, Hawaii and Alaska. I do have a goal of seeing one place new every year, but they have mostly been close to home.
Learn - How to play the piano and how to speak a second language. I learned Spanish in high school and college, but haven't used it since.
Retire - Comfortably and early (not looking good for the early part right now).
Get married again. I have been divorced for longer than I care to admit.
Start or own my own business. I want to know what it is like to be my own boss.
Come up with the "next big thing" that will change the way people do things. Facebook anyone?
Probably a few more, but not coming to mind right now...

1. Take the train from Chicago to Washington/Oregon, rent a car and drive down to Vegas and take the train home from there. 2. Fly into Canada and fish w/ DH, the kids and my parents. 3. Take DH and the kids to Europe. 4. Beat my favorite computer game at the highest level (instead of beginner where I'm stuck because I truly suck at this game, even though I love it.) 5. Watch my kids grow up into healthy and happy adults, whatever their college and career choices may be. 6. Have a well-trained black lab. 7. Build/have a vacation house that we all enjoy spending time at.

Wow, I'm surprise by how many people have "write a book" on their bucket list. Its on mine too, along with going to a world cup (I'm hoping for Brazil) and going to a super bowl. I like to travel lots, but I'm not really picky about where I go. My ex, who is one of my closest friends, was born in Bucharest, Romania, and the way he describes it, it sounds amazing, so that is one place I would like to see. If I did that I would also want to take the train to Transylvania to see Vlad's castle. Cause I'm a little bit goth like that! I'm sure there are many more things I would like to do, but I just haven't ever really thought about it.

Thanks Lena

Looks fun, but WAY too many people. I like small places in the mountains. It actually looks like Wurstfest in New Braunfels, TX. That's always fun too.

I always wanted to do a lot of traveling (Australia, Alaska, Germany, France, Ireland, Scotland, etc.) but with all the craziness going on these days, I'm not quite so inclined. Moeny is also a consideration :(The ex and I had plans to buy a nice motor home and travel around the country doing whatever whenever we wanted. Not going to happen now. My dearest thing I would love to do is move to somewhere small and quaint near the beach. Somewhere you can ride around on a golf cart and you know all your neighbors. But since my parents are counting on me to take care of them when they get older, I guess I won't be able to do that. I was close to having my last dog trained as a therapy dog, but then kids and their activities and life in general got in the way. She's passed now, but she would have been an amazing therapy dog. I'd love to have my current dog trained to do it when I retire, and spend time visiting nursing homes and working with something like meals on wheels and take him with me to visit older people. That's probably the one thing I'm really going to be able to accomplish. And that's ok too.

Now, I don't know if that necessarily means I would be a good author or not. Topics: Travel and/or Personal Finance. I have friends that tell me I should write a book; they are not good with money, but they seem to like my edgy perspective.

Lena: in answer to your question, I would like to write a mystery novel, and also a cookbook in English about my original country's cuisine. Above all I would like to write the mystery novel. It would be very interesting, one of those books you cannot put down at night. It doesn't even have to be a series. I would be happy with just the one. Thanks everybody for posting in this thread. I think it's a lot of fun, helps us get to know the others better by learning about our goals and dreams. Who knows, maybe with a little luck, some of us will get the courage to carry out our dreams.

Thanks Lena I've loved writing since I was a little little kid. I wrote my first short story when I was in 3rd grade for a school project, it was called "My Sister the Alien", my teacher like it so much she submitted it, and I won a young writers award and got to go to a big shindig for it. I've always had a vivid imagination, sometimes so much it almost plays tricks on me. I would like to do suspense/horror. I have several outlines drafted, but I'm too unmotivated to go much further than that.

Well, when someone walks into the room you are in and your first thoughts are: what could be this person's name and his/her backstory...I'm just wired for writing. Actually took me a while to figure out as a kid that not all people think the same things I do when someone walks into a room. But my urge to keep writing has somewhat subdued since I'm here on YM. Everyone here is very sensible. The train ride between Moscow and Vladivostok is also on my list. I've been to Vlad's castle. It's a lot smaller than you think. Romania has wonderful sceneries.

A lot of the things on my bucket list have been accomplished, but one of the joys of living is to keep adding to the list. I do still have to learn to water ski and my 2nd trip to Australia is planned as a gift to myself for my 60th bday. I tried to do a lot of my 'once in a lifetime' things with the life insurance my dad left me. He denied himself so many things because he was scared he'd run out of money, and all he ran out of was time.
