I want to freshen up my resume. I have one but I don't think its that good or I haven't presented the information properly. I have trained a lot of other people and, the ones just laid off, didn't have a problem getting hits on jobs. Last time I looked (a few years ago), I didn't get much interest. How do I know when my resume 'looks right'? Can I go to someone who knows what works and have them do it? How do you find someone good (that would do a better job than I would with a book from the library)?
PLEASE don't ask me to have someone from work review it and I don't have any outside friends who can do it either. That would be a disaster as I'm afraid I would be moved to the front of the lay-off line if management found out I was polishing up my resume. I'm not sure I want to change jobs but I want to be ready if I need to jump ship. I can't be the only one with this problem!
And, I'm a woman (older, chubby) in a man's job. Which I love but its still a struggle to find work. I always have to hide the kids when I interview.

Go to one of those work force agencies that help you get career advice and do interview workshops. I got mine from there. I wrote what I thought sounded good and the lady from there tweaked it. I think it looks good and it seems to do the trick since I always got a bunch of calls right back when I would submit it to a job opening.

My DD is a business student. I just way playing around with my resume, and I mentioned I needed to re-do it b/c it is in an older format. DD said send it to my business teacher...she re-does all our resume's so I am sure she will re-do yours too.
DD is teachers pet (She has at least 200 service hours in for this teacher) and she is graduating in a month...so I should really try to take advantage of this suggestion.
I am not sure you shouldn't do it yourself. The book I was trying to download at the library is an updated version of the What Color is your Parachute book of old. This one is geared to resume writing. They kind of said it was pretty hard to find a good resume service and if you did, it would probably be pricey.

I teach this to my business students so here are my recommendations. They are current US recommendations.
- One page. Yes I know some people feel it's acceptable to do two or more. Up to you. - Reverse chronological order, both for education and jobs - At your age it's up to you whether to start with work experience or with education, you have the choice - Keep the same style EVERYWHERE - Keep the same verb forms EVERYWHERE - Keep it clean, attractive and readable. MUCH better to zap an old job than to have the whole thing in 9 pt text to cram it all in. - Color is acceptable now, but use it very sparingly - NO mistakes, typos, etc. NONE. - Choose your font wisely. You can't go wrong with Helvetica but there are other fonts that are OK too.
Also, your CL should be in the same font, and follow the same guidelines. Don't use the cover letter to tell your life story. Instead, use it to stand out from the competition. Keep the CL to one very easy-to-read page.

There are a lot of online resources. Just do a google search. There are also lots of books out there, probably some at your local library.
I've googled how to do an effective interview before, it really works.

I work for the department of labor in my state. We have offices all over the state (Called one stops) that assist people with this stuff every day. See if you have anything like that near you. Walk in customers are welcome and it's free.

I switched it to landscape; used a script font on my first name but not my last name and then randomly throughout for flair. this was my inspiration
