I try to make it a goal each year that I have no surgeries, but I've been failing that for a while because my body hates me Two years ago I had this thread: ymam.proboards.com/thread/31209/me-luck-success?page=1Since then, the hearing had deteriorated again But, it's still better than it was before. I had a checkup recently, and the doctor said I've fallen into the 4% that requires a second surgery (or hearing aids). I've opted for the surgery. I wish I'd known earlier so I could have put more money into my FSA, but I'll do ok. I just wanted a year without surgery! I go in on Thursday, and that should give me the time I need to heal before my flight in June (am supposed to avoid altitude changes for a month or so). He's going to rebuild the bone again, and add some cartilage to my eardrum to make it less "floppy" (the eardrum is too flexible, causing the issues to recur, damaging/breaking the bones inside my ear). Anyway, wish me luck (again)! The improved hearing was awesome while it lasted, and hopefully this second surgery will make those improvements permanent.

Aww, Apple, I'm sorry you need another surgery. I do hope, however, this one will accomplish a permanent fix! Keep us updated, hon.

I don't know if current technology is better than what you had the first time around. I hope that it is, and that it benefits you to the point of permanent improvement this time. It stinks to be on the roller coaster of needing surgery, getting surgery, getting better and then falling back to where you were. Disheartening, but the world of medicine keeps coming out with new and better fixes. I've benefited from a few myself, and have been very grateful. I hope your next experience is a perfect outcome.

Thanks, everyone!
The timing is probably pretty perfect. I had thought about delaying it until after the vacation, but I've been hit with a pretty bad earache (and dizziness) the last three days. Today I have a mini-heat pack pressed against it, and it helps, but I'm ready for it to be done!
He didn't address the eardrum issue the first surgery, because he didn't realize how much it was interfering. So, hopefully the combo will make things better.

Thanks again Got pretty sick on the ride home--stupid Obama messed with the drive, so we had to take non-freeway roads and ended up taking over an extra hour to get home, with lots of stop lights They had given me a bunch of anti-nausea and anti-dizzy drugs, so I'm sure that helped a ton, don't want to imagine how it would have been without them. Other than that... seems like it went well. I have a big turban style bandage wrapped around my head that I don't get to take off until this afternoon, as well as other bandages in my ear (can change the outer cotton ball this afternoon, but nothing else). Because of the packing, I won't be able to tell how much of a hearing change it made until the end of the month, but I'm excited. I can get out of bed for a short period of time without getting too off balance, so that's improved since yesterday. And I got to be completely waited on by the kiddo once I got home, so that was nice too. The surgery pain killers are still working, and I have good drugs for after, so hopefully I won't have too much pain either. As long as my dog stays away from my head, I should be good
