I went to the first briefing earlier this week, and it was an eye-opening experience. There's a lot of resources out there for jobs, it's just a bit overwhelming I guess. To have so many options - that's the problem! This probably sounds stupid, but when you have the option to do whatever you want it's a little intimidating.
What I'd like to do is woodworking or welding or something, building things. I know that's not the path to riches but it's enjoyable. Or even HVAC, I did that in high school and it was cool.
Are you even 40?
The issue is finding a second career that pays enough to allow you to retire in comfort. Most military retirees that I know/knew needed to work until 55 before they were really financially independent.
Would you stay in AZ? Does your wife have a career?

Congrats on making it until retirement, and good luck as you and your DW sort through all the decisions. Sounds like you started early enough too make the transition as smooth as possible.

I thought the idea was to do things you enjoy, after you retire. No? The time is going to fly by Congrats!

Wait, are you looking for a new career?
If you want to volunteer, maybe Habitat for Humanity?

I do apologize for my language in the previous post too, it was pretty bad. Some of that was because of direct quotes, and some was just from me being irritated. I'm sorry if that post was offensive though. Oh Ratchets, I'm so very sorry.
Actually, just really very, very sorry.
I'm probably not the best sounding board but can be a good one. Just not the best military personal one despite what one might think.
I'v re-read your post and I think the best plan is to plan to retire. How much notice do you need to give them? I think I'd plan to retire and if it gets better you might be able to change your mind. But for your and your family's sanity I think you need a real end date.
And if anyone hasn't said it recently; thank you for your service.

Ratchets, anything I can do just PM me. Maybe just for venting, but I can listen and know your position. Sorry things got so bad so fast. Sounds like these officers are holding on for fear of their career going down with all that happened to the unit before you got there.

Thanks guys. I edited my post, looking back on it that was pretty drama-queenish.
I didn't think it was that. You just sounded extremely frustrated is all. And, it sounds like you are a good leader. Just keep your out-date in mind--even down to a daily count-down if need be. (271 days, I believe... )

Hey, Rachets, any chance of your getting European citizenship? I've joked that DW and I are going to do personalized tours of Ireland when we quit working. The kind where you kind of handhold travelers who would stay at home if they didn't have someone to escort them through their travels. Part of what makes this possible is that DW was able to get Irish citizenship and an Irish passport, so there shouldn't be any work permit issues. (DW could get Irish citizenship because her Grandmother immigrated from Ireland. All it took was enough documentation to establish decendancy, that Great Gran had been born in Ireland, and a few hundred in processing fees.)
