how was the 1500.00 earned, W-2, 1099-misc? for federal purposes if 1099-misc a federal income tax return would be required to pay the SE tax (F.I.C.A. and social security) if w-2 and no other income and no withholding of federal income tax (F.I.C.A. and Medicare are not federal income tax) then no federal filing should be needed, but it cannot hurt to file. For Illinois As she worked in Illinois, generally, a tax filing is required. But, if her only income is the 1,500 there will be zero Illinois tax. If she had Illinois tax withheld the only way to get it refunded would be to file a return. info is available for free at www.revenue.state.il.us/index.htm#t=tab1forms needed www.revenue.state.il.us/TaxForms/IncmCurrentYear/Individual/IL-1040.pdf and www.revenue.state.il.us/TaxForms/IncmCurrentYear/Individual/Schedule-NR.pdfsee each form's instructions too. For Cali Generally, as a resident of California an income tax return is required, but assuming her income is only 1,500 then no tax return is required. more information for free can be found at www.ftb.ca.gov/index.shtml
