Here's my thing about campaign promises from either party - if you listen to them and believe that ABSOLUTELY 100% POSITIVELY THEY ARE GOING TO HAPPEN, you're a fucking dumb ass. To me they're more like guideposts that a candidate will maneuver towards, depending on the political climate and what's actually possible (it's not like a President walks in knowing the inner workings of the government in his first term) - shit happens. Obama didn't dupe anyone here. 'Cause none of us are fucking dumbasses. Nicely intelligently pointed out and said Dezi, I would hope you are being sarcastic in your response. Obama said we would get out. Now he says "no". You can believe the people who are "a little more to the left" than you, are not happy campers right now. They feel they have been betrayed. Where the heck is Code Pink when we need them anyway, or were they just a front for the Democratic Party all the time, to defeat the Republicans, anyway? President Obama should tell America, if he was wrong in his original assessment, and now realizes these people mean real harm to America, otherwise, he should have started the original plan that he had, to get out. "None of us are Fucking dumbasses" As you said, very Nicely intelligently pointed out"......

First off.. there aren't that many people more to the left of me. Though I'm sure a lot of Americans "felt betrayed" by this, they're the kind of Americans (on the left) who either are ignoring reality or are posturing. Those of us HERE (the non-dumb asses I was referring to) tend not to ignore reality or posture. The trials are continuing because congress belligerently refused to bring the detainees stateside and try them in civilian courts. The only two options are to let them rot in gitmo forever or to make sure they have fair trials quickly so that the ones who aren't found guilty can be sent home (or wherever) and the rest can be accomodated for. Feeling betrayed over this would be like feeling betrayed for getting accepted to a college, just not the one you *really* wanted And I'm just sooo sorry that you find swearing to be crude and unintelligent. Really, I'll try to stop using it less so I don't offend your fucking snobbish sensibilities.

As Loop says, and I said earlier, you can't just let these people sit there. Something needs to be done and there's noplace else to do it. Other countries won't take them, and our congress won't allow them to be tried here, in our courts. While the plan was good, the logistics failed. Happens all the time when you meet with a lack of cooperation on all sides. Since we can't throw these folks in the ocean, we need to deal with them where they are and get it over with. That, to me, seems like simple common sense.

The question becomes: When did Obama understand this argument, and WHEN did he know the right was corrrect? Before or after the election? Did he lie to the American public about this, or was he just wrong from the beginning?

Has everyone forgotten that McCain made the exact same promise when he was campaigning? I think that is why no one is upset, no one voted for Obama because of this specific issue. Both parties running took the same stand on this issue, so regardless this outcome would have been the same.
Had McCain there would be a lot of other stuff that I would be really unhappy about, so I am still glad Obama is president & what is happening with guantanamo doesn't change my opinion.

"None of us are Fucking dumbasses" As you said, very Nicely intelligently pointed out"...... Not being sarcastic..things change plus the pubs have made sure there was no way that they would support any $ being spent to open that empty prison for those folks that was proposed, as well as allowing any defense $ to be spent bringing these people to the states. I agreee that many of those to the left , more so then I am are disappointed, remember , I am, yup you know what I am, , which I think allows me to be a bit more pragmatic, realistic in how things work, and less caught up in thinking I have all th answers, it has to be my way or the highway. I don't and I freely admit it. I know what I don't believe in and don't like, on what I do , I am open to other ideas to temper them at times. On this one, I can live with it. always have felt that way. The abuses in the Iraqi prisons by our forces, a cluster F, poor over site by those up there in rank , naturally one female reserve General cashiered as responsible where as the folks from the fortress over looking the Hudson were not mentioned, the old ring knockers taking care of their own, and some lowly enlisted also put against the wall, actually punishment for some especially the ranking ones deserved. Here at Git mo, with the close call of the one tried in the States , when civilian courts can throw out anything unusual in interrogation, and no if guilty, I don't want them released. For those low level ones who just don't care for us, hell so many don't , to spend the majority of their lives locked away, I don't think that's right, possible, they should be after a while, released, keep our fingers crossed they want to stay our of trouble. Hopefully monitored by the home folks, when sent home, they can be brutal I know, and if it's found most are returning to their old ways, it gives us a way to look at future inmates, a walk on the beach with them carrying a shovel, guard coming back alone carrying the shovel.[ No that was just bravado and BS, don't mean that..}
