I'm going on a work trip (came up quick) overseas and we're taking advantage of it to parlay that into a personal trip. The question I have is my better half's passport expires about 3-4 weeks after our trip so I want to get it renewed before we travel to avoid any issues as I've heard sometimes if it's close to expiring it could be a hassle. Generally for an international trip I recall that when getting flight tickets we have to provide passport numbers or some passport information. If we get a new passport with a new passport number before the trip but after booking flights is that a problem? Do we just carry the old passport along with the new one for reference? As I said this came up kind of quick and we didn't realize that one of the passports was expiring shortly after our travel dates. Thanks in advance for any input.

You may be right and I'm probably confusing entering just names and possibly citizenship (country) info. It's been a few years since I've flown international but wanted to order tickets asap.

you don't need your passport number to buy the tickets, just for the customs declaration form when you come back. you will need to scan the passport both leaving and re-entering the country. sent from my electronic distraction

If you put the passport number in, and then get a new passport, just call the airline and update the information. Shouldn't be a big deal.

I think we only flew Iceland and Easy Jet this last time... I think both required it? I know Easy Jet did. My mom went with us and I specifically needed to get her passport number before I could buy tickets...

Sent from my HTC One_M8 using proboards I'd honestly check this first. They don't like to change info and it could trigger either a fee or a flagging for security.

Changing information isn't a big deal, I have done it over the years with zero problems whatsoever. I have entered the wrong passport number before- typo- and had it changed with no problem. A couple of months ago I realized I booked my MIL's plane ticket under the name she goes by, her middle name, not her first name. I called to change the name, so it was her first name on the ticket instead of the middle name. It was easy and issueless. We traveled a few weeks ago and encountered no problems at all. If it makes the OP feel better, give the airline a call. But logically, what other solution would there be? If you are required to enter a number at the time of booking, they wouldn't ever say "don't book until you have the new passport." Sent from my HTC One_M8 using proboards

I know the option is always there. I have flown internationally on continental, United, British airways, Ryan air and easy jet... But haven't traveled internationally in the last 5 years, so maybe the requirement is new? Sent from my HTC One_M8 using proboards

I thought I remember at least once entering passport numbers but as I said I may be mistaken as my international flights have been few and far between over the last decade. I'll be ordering tickets soon and if I need to enter passport numbers I'll update with the airlines once the new passport comes. Thanks for all of the follow ups.

Doesn't your passport # stay the same? Just the expiration date and an updated photo that changes?

I'm pretty sure my aunt entered ours when she bought our tickets to Jamaica. We flew Delta. Or she may have just needed them for registering our trip with the State Department on the thing they have.

I actually looked into this yesterday thinking it wouldn't be an issue if the number didn't change and multiple sites said it does: www.us-passport-service-guide.com/will-the-number-change-when-i-renew-my-passport-with-my-new-married-name.html

Interesting. I guess I never paid attention!
If you need a new passport very soon you'll want to go their express route. It's expensive but they do turn it around as promised. We had to go through that when we did a Stateside visit while we were living in Germany. You might also check if you can go to a passport office in person. Not sure if they still do that anymore.

I've had to do it with both air Canada and westjet. Though if you didn't have it when booked you could go back and enter it at a later time.

I looked at the kids old and new ones yesterday to check and they were different numbers.

I had to drive to Detroit because mine expired before my trip to St. Martin. It's more expensive but I paid what I call the "stupid tax." Glad to pay it and take my trip.

I was able to order the tickets without entering the passport information at the time of purchase but do need to go back and enter the passport numbers before we travel.
