Just thought I would say hello. So - HELLO! Interesting times in my household. Life is moving forward nicely, so I thought I would share. My oldest son is 22 and has never worked. He has some mental health issues, and has had a hard time with his father's passing, etc... He started looking for a job nearly a year ago and hasn't even been able to get a fast food job because he has no work experience. So, I talked him into going to the local temp agency a while back. A couple months passed, and still no work. Then the agency calls and says spring projects are starting and they wonder if he would like to help with some concrete at a local business for a couple days. DS shows up early, works hard, talks to the guys at the mill he is working at about how hard it is to find a job here, etc.... Second day of concrete he thanks the boss for helping him and giving him a chance. Sunday comes and the owner of the temp agency calls - they thought he was a fantastic worker and one of the mill workers quit. Does DS want to come work full time in the mill and be trained and then hired by them? So, DS is finishing up his first week of working tomorrow. While he isn't thrilled about making decorative bark for a living, he is happy for the work and is trying the best he can to fit in and do the job as well as possible. I am so dang proud of him! DS2 is in his 2nd year of college and moved out a few months ago. His job recently cut his hours, so he moved back home. While that makes the finances harder for me, it was a necessary move and I am happy to have him back home until he leaves for a university after next year. As for me, I am working from home, and still spending a lot of time out in the woods hiking with my dogs. I recently reconnected with someone I hadn't talked to in a very long time, and discovered he lives not too far from me. I am going down to see him in a couple weeks.

Excellent! Good news especially about DD1. ALways gratifying when hard work is noticed and rewarded.

Glad you stopped by to fill us in, Shasta. Congrats to DS1 and to you and DS2 for working out a solution that works for both of you.

Sounds like more ups than downs, and you are certainly capable of handling the downs by now!

Shasta- thanks for the update! I'm glad to hear DS1 found something he does well. Even though it's not his dream job, it has to hep his self-esteem to be making money and to know people value his work.
You've talked before about the interesting rocks you find and I can't remember- have you tried selling them? I know that because they're heavy, they'd have to be sold locally- but if you find yourself a network of interior decorators whose clients have bottomless checkbooks and put up pictures of your collections on a site like Shutterfly, you might pick up a few extra bucks.

Thanks for the update. What happened to your job? I discovered that I am not able, mentally, to deal with the criminal element all day with a lot of cash and very little security. It's been okay though, it has given me a new found appreciation for working from home and has seemed to be the motivator in getting me to work more. The last couple years my goals have been fitness related. Now that I am fit, and on that track, this year is about income. I have to pay my property taxes or I will lose my house. I also have to fix my leaking roof this summer, even if I have to climb up there and do the new roof myself. So, it's also pretty motivating to get more work completed. Both of my kids working helps a lot. They are able to buy things for themselves that they need, and they both buy groceries and stuff when we need it. I've been trying to transition the kids' thinking to where if they want to live like adults, and we are "sharing" a house, then they need to contribute to their costs. They are still a bit in that place of what's mine is ours, but what is theirs is theirs... We are working on that.
