This has become a pretty big topic in the soap making world. It explains why a perfectly good soap recipe has suddenly gone bad and it has been pretty costly for some having to toss batch after batch and not knowing what happened. I only use Costco's now also.

I use EVOO from California Olive Ranch. Fortunately, it appears to be the real stuff. I don't know that I would have known if it wasn't.

I'm a Costco/Kirkland olive oil fan too (the EVOO in the green glass bottle, imported from Italy), but there are also two other excellent (they passed the tests!) California olive oils, in case you run across them: Corto Olive Oil (a company run by a family of Italian immigrants) and McEvoy Ranch. The McEvoy oil is particularly deep and fruity and grassy - if you like intense flavors .

We have a local olive mill here that I buy from if I don't buy from Costco.

I get mine from a small boutique tasting shop called the olive mill. While it's entirely possible theirs may be doctored, I kinda would find that hard to believe given the absolute fantastic level of quality. Another area to do a little research if you're so inclined is honey. Most of the honey imported into the US is supposedly sourced from countries (India, etc) that don't have anywhere near the production capacity of what they are supposedly exporting. Since Chinese honey is banned from US importation the US honey industry suspects most Indian imported honey is actually "laundered" Chinese honey. www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/08/honey-laundering/#.VPdPlPLnZCowww.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2014/11/26/366804155/why-american-honey-importers-are-wary-of-turkish-honeyHmmm, added second article. Turns out Turkey is now a "top producer". Same game, different country. I've been buying my honey for over a decade from the same local producer. My only regret, since we're in the upper Midwest I can't get local orange blossom honey.

I had a large bottle of Bertolli. I put what was left into my glass olive oil container and put it in the fridge. Yep, it's not real.

I hope that I can find good olive oil in San Antonio. I have been ridiculously spoiled the last 3 years with amazing stuff. I am trying to ship some back with me, but it does go bad, so I can't ship a lot.

Mine comes from the Greek restaurant around the corner. Their family's business in Greece is producing olive oil.

My olive oil smells like the inside of a Jiffy Lube. That is how it is supposed to smell, right?

I thought everyone just bought olive oil at the grocery store, but every article/post I've read about this it seems like there are a lot of comments like "Oh, I buy my from an olive oil shop..they import it right from Italy every week"
