a lot of Americans are fat and stupid, that's not news. True but it said that the majority of US born residents are fatter and stupider than the foriegners.

This is actually quite simple to explain. People who come to this country are a select group. They are being compared to a general group. People in NJ who are chronically ill stay in NJ. People in other countries who are chronically ill stay in those countries. Thus, those who immigrate are healthier than the general population that they move into.

I thought maybe it was the result of immigrating from countries with socialized health care.

Another difference might be that the people who come here tend to keep to their accustomed diets, which are usually much more healthy than many of our people eat. There's also the fact that they're not averse to walking a distance to get to the store, or whatever, as opposed to using the car as their only transportation, even if they're only going a few blocks.

I know everyone is joking around but this was brought up in the study. Which by the way was done by the State of NJ. They called it selective migration coupled with the fact that when foreign born people become sick they also tend to go back to their country of their birth.

Ok, was just checking. Wanted to make sure that immigrating had nothing to do with the health of the citizens, it was the fact they were healthier before.

Exactly. America has a hostile food environment... the cheap things are made of corn products and/or beef that's plugged full of antibiotics and hormones. We blanket our grocery stores in pre-made meals. Immigrants generally come from places that still make their own meals FOOD REVOLUTION!!! ;D

Wow, according to the libs, I don't see why immigrants would even WANT to come here. They and their children will be poisoned by our horrible processed foods, harassed by our racist police officers, mistaken for terrorists by our bigoted airline screeners, discriminated against by our employers and schools and beaten by angry mobs of racist Tea Party activists! What's the point of even showing up?

Um, that's because in the rest of the world your health plan is "Don't get sick". So, naturally-- if they survived, they're healthy. The unhealthy foreingers are dead. Does anyone-- I mean anyone at all-- still have the ability to reason? Maybe we should re-think our system and switch to the survival of the fittest system they have in other countries. The stupid are just plain living too long.

At least they will not be discriminated by our racist tax code.

Don't know where you live but a lot of people around here do it. I buy beef from a friend who raises it and processes on her ranch, and we have some pigs of our own, which I butcher myself for the major pieces and then bring the bits and parts to a local German deli guy who makes great sausage, pate, etc. I'm sure there's someone in your area who does something similar.

Slightly unrelated, but I thought this was a really cool article: www.nytimes.com/2011/03/06/us/06farmers.html?_r=1&smid=fb-nytimes&WT.mc_id=US-SM-E-FB-SM-LIN-NGO-030611-NYT-NA&WT.mc_ev=clickEspecially for semi-rural communities like the one I live in, you'd think there would be better opportunities for growing, canning, raising livestock (ordinances prohibit raising chickens in neighborhoods within city limits, for instance), co-op butcher opportunities, etc, but it hasn't been a priority of Americans for so, so long. Our brains are shifting and our eating habits with it, but it's still a struggle! We'll get there though The farm to table movement is gaining steam!

Out of necessity, my grandparents grew much of their own food; one even kept a cow and made her own butter. They were far healthier than my generation. They didn't have pesticides, but made their own from herbs, fertilizer was manure and compost. Both grandmother's lived into their 90's. The baby on my dad's side is 82 and still kicking. My grandfathers died young, of complications from being coal miners. Those who escaped the mines lived into their late 80's and overall, they enjoyed better health than subsequent generations.

I doubt we can stave off cancer as I think the causes of it is laced through our food system and water.
That is correct. The problem stems from the fact we cannot produce food quickly enough in a natural manner to feed the overpopulation. Some degree of profit gouging is also part of it. It is hilarious to watch all of the spinoff industries like the plethora of cancer causes and all of the expensive treatments for cancer victims. The cure for cancer? Grow food naturally.

I buy my meat and eggs, and most of my produce from local producers. However, my mother is 90 years old and has eaten whatever she wished for her whole life. No cancer anywhere in our family of which we're aware.

After reading this, I wondered if cancer was a modern disease with a modern cause. I found the following quote. 18th century -cancer? The famous Scottish surgeon John Hunter (1728–1793) suggested that some cancers might be cured by surgery and described how the surgeon might decide which cancers to operate on. If the tumor had not invaded nearby tissue and was "moveable," he said, "There is no impropriety in removing it." www.cancer.org/Cancer/CancerBasics/TheHistoryofCancer/the-history-of-cancer-renaissance-period

Yes, bill. Cancer has been along a lot longer than food additives and "spiked" livestock feed.
