www.firstpost.com/world/watch-us-cop-slams-indian-grandfather-to-ground-tells-him-to-chill-out-2096611.html
In addition to arresting the police official who is accused of assaulting a 57-year-old Indian national in Alabama leaving him partially paralyzed, US authorities have released new videos from the dashboard cameras of two police officials' cars that show Sureshbhai Patel being taken to the ground after being unable to answer the questions.
One of the videos is shot by a police official who arrived on the scene on 6 February just in time to see the two policemen who accosted Patel knock him to the ground and restrain him.
The video shows the police vehicle pull up and the police official in the car walk up to the other two officials.
One of the officials is heard explaining,"He (Patel) doesn't speak any English...Tried patting him down and he keeps on walking away from me."
The police officials are seen searching Patel for any personal belongings and try to get him to stand but realise that he's unable to.
On realising that he's unable to stand the police officials wipe dirt off Patel and keep asking him if he can speak English.

When I first read the title I was thinking it was going to be some ghandi looking dude.....57 isn't that old. If the guy is partially paralzed, then these guys are in big trouble....still though, I can't believe how fast that guy went flying when the cop took him down.

Actually, I just looked at the 2nd link and the guy does look pretty old/frail. I assumed the guy was a regular drunk or something who happened to be indian and happened to be a grandfather. That's crazy...what the hell is wrong with that cop?

Are cops not given any training in how to deal with medical issues like people with dementia? Or, mentally ill? Or what about autistic people who are pulled over by cops? What about dealing with intoxicated people, etc? Funny that mental health professionals can manage to deal with all kinds of situations without beating people and slamming them to the ground. It surely seems they could have easily restrained his arms behind his back if needed. By what RIGHT did they have to accost him? Resisting arrest? What the Hell was he being arrested for? Is this Nazi Germany or a communist country where we have to produce papers? They had no right whatsoever. He was breaking no laws. That cop should be tried to for assault and battery.

He was a "suspicious person"
I guess he failed to show his papers. He told them 'Indian- no English' so I can see the reason to sweep his leg and put him face first into the ground. Obviously the two officers could not control such a dangerous person.
I wonder why people feel the need to call police on a person walking down a sidewalk.
BTW they do have training on dealing with the mentally ill- shoot center mass.

I don't know how the Indian was walking down the street but if he were staggering or seemed in a daze, I'd call the police. If there was another person with me, I'd go up and ask if he was okay first.

There was nothing wrong in calling the Police. Ok, drive by and check this out. They turned this into an incident and problem.

I was acquainted with the man in this link, and saddened at his passing. Being a small town local cop, he was unaware of the manhunt underway for this nutbag from Massachusetts. This is one reason cops do the things they do. They never know what kind of person they're going to run into. www.odmp.org/officer/18137-officer-james-walter-sell

I'm wondering if he really was wandering the neighborhood and going in and out of people's garages and yards. I think I would have called the cops if I saw that but if he really didn't speak English, why would he not have his son's name, address, and phone number on him? That doesn't excuse what happened but when I've been in a country where English is not spoken widely, I carry the name of where I'm staying, it's addtess, and it's phone number. Just for safety reasons. I could be unable to speak and authorities would have no clue who I am.

"Patel, who lives in India, was visiting his son in Alabama and walking around the neighborhood when he encountered the officers. His attorney said he doesn't speak English, which led to the confusion when a neighbor called 911 to report a "skinny black guy" wandering the street. The highlighted was his only crime. I mean, good lord, i have no idea what's going on in his life. I am thinking that maybe I would mind my own fucking business.

Yahoo. Article on Yahoo. Asking someone who is wandering in a daze or appears ill is not rude. If he was just walking around, no I wouldn't bother him. The article said the person that called claimed he was going in and out of people's garages. I'm amazed people just leave their doors up. To me that's like leaving my front door open. Calling the cops is probably the safest most times, except for this time obviously
