Japan halts Pfizer, Sanofi vaccines after four die
3 6 11 1 hr 2 mins ago
TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan's health ministry has halted the use of vaccines made by Pfizer Inc. and Sanofi-Aventis SA following the deaths of four children.
Pfizer's Prevenar and Sanof's ActHIB, which are each used to prevent forms of meningitis and pneumonia, will be suspended while the causes of the deaths are investigated, the ministry said in a release on its website.
In February last year health authorities in the Netherlands said no relation was found between Prevenar and the deaths of three infants who had received the vaccine.

Sunday, March 6, 2011Four infant deaths trigger vaccines halt
Kyodo News The health ministry has decided to suspend the use of two types of publicly subsidized vaccines following the deaths of four children.
Municipal governments were notified of the decision.
The two types are the Hib vaccine, which prevents bacterial meningitis, and a vaccine against streptococcus pneumonia.
There have been no reports so far from the doctors who treated the children that there is a causal relationship between the vaccines and the deaths, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.
The ministry is planning to assemble a panel of experts this week after consulting with other doctors to examine the cases, according to officials.
The ministry is expected to let the vaccinations resume if the panel decides the two vaccines don't pose serious safety concerns.
The four children were a 3-month-old girl in Kawasaki who died Feb. 20, a 2-year-old boy in Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecture, who died Tuesday, a 1-year-old girl in Nishinomiya, also in Hyogo, who died Wednesday, and a 6-month-old girl in the city of Kyoto who died Friday.
The doctors of the children described the causal relationship between the vaccines and their deaths as either unclear or impossible to evaluate. Some had underlying illnesses and others did not.
All four children were administered a vaccine against streptococcus pneumonia made by Pfizer Inc., and all except the girl in Nishinomiya received ActHIB, an Hib vaccine made by Sanofi Pasteur Inc.
In addition, all except the boy in Takarazuka received a mixed vaccine against diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus on the same day they received other vaccines.
The streptococcus pneumonia vaccine has been administered to an estimated 1.10 million people in 2.15 million doses since it went on sale in February 2010. The Hib vaccine has been administered to an estimated 1.55 million people in 3.08 million doses since its launch in December 2008.
Japan, known for being notoriously slow to accept new vaccines, approved the Hib vaccine in 2007, 20 years after the United States did so. Approval for the streptococcus pneumonia vaccine came in 2009, compared with 2000 in the U.S.
An increasing number of people are believed to be receiving these vaccines because of a subsidy program launched last November in which the government agrees to shoulder half the cost of vaccination if municipal governments organize and subsidize vaccination programs.search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20110306a3.html

If you have not realized it yet, the controversy over swine flu vaccinations is about to get very, very real. The authorities know that a lot of people are extremely concerned about the safety of the swine flu vaccine, and they are putting the infrastructure in place to deal with those dissenters.
Let us hope that the worst case scenario with the swine flu does not take place, but the reality is that health authorities across the United States are gearing up for the biggest vaccination campaign in the nation's history. It looks like this fall could be very, very interesting.

Door to Door Vaccinations: Training the Public for Forced Innoculations
September 27, 2011
Natomas, CA school officials are going door to door with a traveling nurse to give whooping cough shots to unvaccinated students. A new state law requires students entering seventh through 12th grades to get vaccinated against the disease by the start of the 2011-12 school year. The legislature gave districts 30 days beyond the start of the school year to make sure all students were vaccinated or had a formal exemption filed by their parents or guardians. As the deadline passes, thousands of students remain unvaccinated. Many school districts have been defying state law and allowing them on campus. But not anymore in Natomas.

When you hear these words you know you’re in deep trouble.
“I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”

"Land of the Free"? What a joke. It's comforting to see another [freedom seeker] on the board.
Have a GREAT day!

October 2011Finland to compensate pandemic vaccine narcolepsy patients Finland's government and an insurance company group announced yesterday that they would team up to pay for the lifetime medical care of children who experienced narcolepsy after receiving the 2009 H1N1 vaccine, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported. The Finnish Pharmaceutical Insurance Pool (LVP) said it would honor all related claims and review each one individually to gauge the payout amount, and the Finnish government said it would cover medical costs that exceed the insurance amounts. Meanwhile, Finnish news service YLE reported yesterday that 92 people have contacted the LVP about narcolepsy symptoms and requested compensation. On Sep 1 a final report from Finnish officials confirmed the link between the 2009 H1N1 Pandemrix vaccine and narcolepsy cases and said as of late August they had received 98 reports of narcolepsy in people who had received it, most of them children.

Finland vows care for narcolepsy kids who had swine flu shot
(AFP) – Oct 5, 2011
HELSINKI — The Finnish government and major insurance companies announced Wednesday they will pay for lifetime medical care for children diagnosed with narcolepsy after receiving the swine flu vaccine.
"The compensation will provide much-needed financial assistance for the families, although it cannot take away the emotional distress caused by this condition," Social Services and Health Minister Paula Risikko said in a statement.
Finnish and international researchers recently found a conclusive link between the Pandemrix swine flu vaccine and new cases of narcolepsy, a chronic nervous system disorder which causes people to often uncontrollably fall asleep.
The Finnish Pharmaceutical Insurance Pool (LVP), which represents insurance companies, said Wednesday it would honour all insurance claims in this category.
LVP said it would review each claim individually to calculate the scope of the payout.
The Finnish government meanwhile agreed to cover any medical costs exceeding the insurance claims.
In Finland, 79 children between the ages of four and 19 developed narcolepsy after receiving the Pandemrix vaccine in 2009 and 2010.
Of these cases, an unusually high number, 76, also suffered from bouts of cataplexy, suffering hallucinations or paralysing physical collapses, according to Finnish research.

With VLP, these types of costly mistakes can be avoided...www.novavax.com/ Faulty vaccine caused foot and mouth outbread 11 1 11 Faulty vaccine caused foot-and-mouth outbreak: Paraguay AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSENOVEMBER 1, 2011 One of the most contagious animal diseases known to scientists, foot-and-mouth (also known as hoof-and-mouth) disease infects mainly cattle and swine but also sheep and goats.
ASUNCION, PARAGUAY - A botched vaccine intended to protect Paraguay’s livestock against foot-and-mouth disease was responsible for transmitting the ailment to hundreds of animals that later had to be destroyed, the government said Tuesday.
After extensive laboratory tests, Paraguayan and international scientists concluded that "human error" and "negligence" in the production of the vaccine caused the outbreak last September, a top veterinary official here said.
"After the most recent laboratory analysis, we have confirmed that the outbreak of foot and mouth disease... came about as a result of problems with the vaccination of animals," said Daniel Rojas, head of Paraguay’s National Service for Animal Health and Quality. "There now is no doubt that it was human error that led to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth," he said.
The affected animals were at the Santa Helena ranch, a hacienda some 400 kilometers (250 miles) northeast of Asuncion, in the department of San Pedro.
Authorities said all told, more than a thousand cattle had to be sacrificed during the outbreak, which sent tremors through a region that prizes its meat industry.
Officials said they have not yet determined who would be held accountable for the costly mistake.. "We still have to identify at what stage in the process the problem occurred, determine who was responsible for the mistake and punish them," Rojas said, adding that the outbreak "led to significant economic losses for the country."
The outbreak prompted neighboring countries to ban the import of Paraguayan meat, livestock, and meat by-products to prevent the spread of the disease across international boundaries.
The export ban was a major blow to tiny, mostly rural Paraguay, where beef is the number two export, totaling $650 million last year. Officials estimate that the ban costs the economy some $70 million each month.
One of the most contagious animal diseases known to scientists, foot-and-mouth (also known as hoof-and-mouth) disease infects mainly cattle and swine but also sheep and goats.
The disease can be spread with dust, animal-to-animal in herds, through consumption of contaminated animal products and even with farm implements and vehicles.
Although adult animals normally do not die from the disease, they must be destroyed once infected to keep it from spreading.www.montrealgazette.com/story_print.html?id=5637999&sponsor=
