'The impact of having one of your colleagues directly affected by the legislation on the table is very powerful,' activist says NEW YORK — Of America's 7,382 state legislators, only 85 are openly gay or lesbian. They are, however, playing an outsized and often impassioned role when the agenda turns to recognizing same-sex couples with civil unions or full marriage rights. In Hawaii and Illinois, gay state representatives were lead sponsors of civil union bills signed into law earlier this year. In Maryland and Rhode Island, gay lawmakers are co-sponsoring pending bills that would legalize same-sex marriage. In New York, a gay senator, Tom Duane, is preparing to be lead sponsor of a marriage bill in his chamber later this session. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41937565/ns/politics-more_politics/

Aren't legislators supposed to represent their constituents rather than their own agendas?

Aren't legislators supposed to represent their constituents rather than their own agendas? As a majority of constituents elected a known gay candidate to represent them in their state legislatures, the legislator is representing the majority will of his constituents. There are no surprises where a candidate stands on gay issues when you elect a gay person for the job. That would clearly have been discovered during the campaign season.

It just so happens that they're also a walking billboard for one of the causes that their constituents care about.

Aren't legislators supposed to represent their constituents rather than their own agendas? Has it occurred to you that these legislators have gay constituents along with their straight constituents, ed?

Seems to me that I read somewhere that "All people are created equal". To me that means equal rights for everybody. The religious right are the ones that are against gay marriages & pushing that as their political agenda. I'm thinking that I also saw somewhere something about separation of church & state? WTH?
