I worked with DD to complete her tax return and she e-filed last week. She had job income and student loan deductions and will be getting back $1200.
We'll this week we got in the mail another income statement for $1500. She had an internship 2 years ago and part of her compensation was a payment toward her student loans, which she filed for and received last year. W-2 was late and we had forgot about this. I think she will owe bac $300 of her return.
Should she just wait to get her refund and then file an amended return? As long as it is before April 15 she should be ok?

wait to get the refund, then amend. if you amend before your original return gets processed, the IRS will get all confused.
the IRS is easily confused.

not only is the IRS easily confused they are short staffed.... as noted, file the amended return after the IRS processes the refund claim.... in the past I have had client get a corrected 1099 or other data that they forgot after the original return was filed. as long as you file the amendment by 4-15 and remit any extra tax due, you should be okay.
