Speaking of gyms, there is one on the first floor of the building my new office is going to be in. I'm totally tempted to spend the money to join. I could go in early, beat rush hour, have no problem getting to my parking spot. Work out, shower there, then work for the day. Decisions..... Although I prefer to run outside, moving farther north, I may end up investing in a gym membership or a treadmill.

I prefer running outside but daylight savings ending makes it hard, so in the winter months I use the gym during the week and run outside on weekends. Cold gear is my friend!

I could go down there at strange times (like when I had a 2 hour incubation), work out and get back into the lab without having to move my car. I could also keep my gym gear at work. It was free. This worked, for about 6 months. Then the equipment started breaking down and it was taking them too long to fix it. That was when I started shopping for a gym.

Jesus Christ, this is why some people are afraid to go to the gym. Who even notices what other people look like (apparently, a lot of y'all)? I've never noticed who is wearing makeup or who has expensive clothes, who is "really" working out and who is just wasting their time (hint: no one - even that girl who played games on her tablet for two hours on the elliptical got what she wanted out of it). What's the point of judging someone else's workout? I assume everyone there is doing exactly what they want and good for them. No kidding. Some people have cute gym outfits, so what? Most of those chicks look pretty good in their outfits, so I assume their workout is doing something for them!! I usually have on something more slovenly, although I buy those quick dry shirts and don't use freebie t-shirts because I sweat. I go to the gym straight after work, so whatever makeup I have on at the end of the day is what I go with. If some twat is judging me because I have on mascara that's not my problem.
Mostly I don't notice what other people are doing unless it is loud next to me (I don't want to hear anyone yapping on their phone next to me because it is annoying, not because I specifically care what they do on their treadmill), or if they are hogging up some piece of equipment I want to be on. I am baffled by this group of three that works out at my gym literally carrying a grocery bag of candy and snacking on it. So bizarre. But they don't make me eat it so whatever.
I am one of those that prefers to work out in a gym. I do exercise at home sometimes but am way more inclined to make it a shorter workout than at the gym, because of all the other things around the house I know I should be doing. So I fully support the idea of a gym membership if that's what works for moneymom. But I'd maybe start with a cheaper gym. I go to one of those $10 a month gym and it's not remotely a meat market, just a bunch of people exercising with headphones on.

Although I do find humor when someone is all gussied up to work out, but then they aren't working out because they're too busy talking on the phone.
WTF? I'd notice them too.
I also notice the people that grunt really loud when they lift weights, just because I find grunts annoying. But if the weight isn't really heavy, I giggle.

Bad swamp, bad! My husband is very thin (6' and 149 lb) and very fit, and I should hate him for being skinnier than me (he has three pounds and seven inches on me). He does long-distance cycling and we run together, and he's very nice about running with me even though he is a much faster runner. Anyway, he was at the gym a few weeks ago, minding his own business lifting weights, and when finishes he hears these two dudes grunting and talking about working up to bitch weight. F@ckers were mocking hubs because he's a skinny white dude in a gym! Hubs did make a shirt that says "bitch weight" to wear to the gym. I wished heart attacks on those guys. One of us is better at expressing frustration than the other. Moral of the story: everyone at the gym- men and women- sucks.

I'm sure DH is doing just fine. Was he grunting? I'd mock him for that, though.

I notice only the exceptions. We're all here to stay fit, after all.
The exceptions, however, DO include loud talkers, grunters and weight-droppers. (There are always signs asking that you NOT drop weights but there's always one clown in the bunch.) I'm SO tempted to walk over to the Mr. Machos who grunt and groan and then drop the weights loudly and suggest that perhaps they might want to lift lighter weights, but I don't want to pi*s off someone with esay access to 200 lbs. of iron.

It's also the type of makeup they use. TV/movie makeup is manufactured differently from the stuff we buy at CVS, Walgreens and the department stores. It's applied with sponges, brushes and sometimes sprayed on, for an even "coating" and to better hide flaws in this HD/digital age. This reminded of high-school plays I was in. There was special stage makeup, but we also used the Max Factor pancake makeup. You can get it anywhere, or at least you could. I used it through my 20's and partly into my 30's. I got some compliments on my great skin, even though it is and was far from great (and probably worse for using that makeup).

We have a family membership for ~$50/month that is for a very small gym that has six treadmills, three ellipticals, three recumbant bicycles, one tv for them all, and free weights and the circuit weights. I only use the cardio machines. DH uses cardio and both weight areas, and the girls use both a little bit. There is also a sauna and locker rooms. We don't use those at all. We also walk as it's one block away. That's fantastic. No excuse for not going. moneymom, what is it that you're looking for in your life right now? You're actual question "will I still be grounded?" leads to much deeper questions that just the one about the gym. What is it you're trying to change? Is the volunteer work really fulfilling you right now? How often does your family eat out? Is it always dinner or is it sometimes breakfast and lunch? What other family time do the three of you have other than eating out? What type of stuff do you and your daughter do together? What do you and husband do together? Why is the gym the answer? I know you said it was more about reducing your weight, but I still think you need to think about the family time that seems to be the underlying theme here. Is that what you're trying to change? Is it how you feel about yourself and/or how you feel physically? And, I hate the wench who left the remote control on the counter and then yelled at me for changing the channel. If you want the channel to remain the same, then keep the remote with you!

I got a free membership and went twice in two weeks. First time I worked out about 10 minutes then walked some laps in the pool. Next time did one hour of aqua fit class. My new swimsuit isn't good for aqua fit, it is a tank and short and the shorts want to ride down while exercising. I ordered a new suit it arrives Friday. I am hoping since now my spa bag and lock have been out and I will own three swimsuits I might go regularly. My SIL does Monday, Wednesday Friday at 9 AM so could do the one she goes to or a 6PM at either branch. I need to get out of the house more so will be going to the gym if all I do is an hour 3 times a week.
