What do you like doing? If you want to mix it up, do something fun that you will enjoy. That's the only way to stick to it. There's so much you can do... especially if you live in a fine weathered state like CA.
hike bike rollerblade trail running etc.
The only reason I joined the gym is for the pool and for strength training. I prefer the circuit training machines as opposed to free weights at home to help keep my form in check. But I also enjoy some of the cross training stuff that is available on days when it is too rainy too go outside (rowing machines, etc).
I think just joining a gym without a real plan is not a good idea and will lead to a waste of money. You have to know what you want to do as opposed to just signing up.

How about doing some bike riding? That's a higher level work-out than walking, a different set of muscles, the glutes, the biggest muscle in the body. When you put them to work, you're burning lots of calories - higher heart rate, blood flow, oxygen uptake, etc. Of course 3 miles won't do it, you'll need more distance - does your city have of-street trails where you can go 8 to 12 miles?

Some people like gyms. Personal I'd rather be outside walking or cycling. But if you're concerned about the weather, a gym is often cheaper than the medical problems caused by inactivity you also can't take classses (yoga, zumba, etc.) just being outside. and if the gym has a pool, you can use it year round. You can if you are in a movie or a TV show.

Companies in my city offer outdoor yoga, Zumba, and boot camp classes. You still have to pay for them (unless it's during our free yoga week, which is pretty cool). Of course, I gladly pay money to work out INSIDE in the summer, in the A/C. When the boot camp instructors at my gym start setting up outside, I head to a different class!

I don't think wanting a nice gym membership means you're not grounded unless you can't afford it! I would look at why you want a fancier gym though - is it the socializing aspect, do you exercise more in that type of space, etc. to see if it's really worth it. One of the things I discovered at the more expensive gym was that people were really LESS inclined to socialize. Most people that were there were there to exercise and get this out of the way. And like I mentioned earlier, it REALLY takes the meat market aspect out of it. When I worked out, I looked it. But when I was visiting gyms trying to figure out which one to join, I got a 7 day membership to try a cheaper gym. I was on a piece of equipment, sweating like a stuck pig and most of the women there were dressed to the hilt in matching workout wear, curled hair and perfect make up. I realized then that the gym was less of a place to work out and more of a pick up joint. With my (admittedly small) sample, the more expensive the gym, the less you saw this happen.

Download the You Are Your Own Gym app for $2.99. Thanks to this thread, I bought this app and tried it tonight. I just did day 1 of the basic workout. I'm pretty sure my arms aren't going to work tomorrow.

Yeah, there's a Lady of a Certain Age in our community gym who dresses to the nines- I swear she's got false eyelashes along with full makeup. My workout wardrobe consists of a few pairs of shorts bought at outlet stores plus several stacks of freebie T-shirts from previous employers, blood drives, athletic events, etc. I agree with the recommendations that the OP get into a fitness routine first, then invest in a gym membership. We have a local community center and a senior membership is $100. I use it almost daily except in nice weather when I go on long bicycle rides.

Fake lashes, perfect makeup and perfect outfits. And taking all the selfies they can. I wanna go over, rip off those eyelashes, scrub off the makeup and hurl their i-Whatever into the nearest canal. I already look bad without their added assistance.

Not that I wear makeup, but I can pretty much wring my shirt out when I'm done working out. I'm not there to be pretty.
There was one day I was at the gym, I was next to a woman on the elliptical who spent the entire time on it yacking on the phone. She didn't break a sweat. I was wondering why she was there. And yes, she had a pretty coordinating outfit on.

Just a quick wash in the locker with makeup remover and I am done.

But I also don't wear a lot of make up to work usually so if I have some on it's off by the first time I wipe my sweat covered face. None of it matters anyway since the top half of me turns beet red when I start working out. Having your face flesh colored when your neck and chest are bright red would not be a good look lol I I

But whatever suits you.

And that's my age old question. Unless all I'm doing is walking, I am sweating at the gym. Like bring a towel and wipe my face so it doesn't get in my eyes.

I remove my makeup before a workout for two reasons:
1) I've had eye surgery, and don't want mascara and eye shadow getting in my eyes. Neither component is waterproof or smudge-proof, so both have to be removed before profuse sweating.
2) I remove my foundation because it looks strange when it's all streaked and runny on my T-shirt. Also don't want it caked on and clogging my pores when I sweat.

Probably the best thing I wore was on my feet, I could get about 6 months out of a good pair of sneaks and then they got relegated to bumming about sneaks. My shorts were from the men's section at Reebok outlet.....because they were long enough to cover my ass. I didn't wash my make up off, but after work it was mostly gone as I didn't wear much anyway. My point is that it is much more comfortable to be working out around your peers. My peers were not 19 year old college students, but professionals. As much as you try not to, you compare and my 40 year old body was never going to be 19 again. I would rather aspire to the body of a 50 year old kindergarten teacher as an attainable goal, because it was more attainable than a 19 year old body.

Jesus Christ, this is why some people are afraid to go to the gym. Who even notices what other people look like (apparently, a lot of y'all)? I've never noticed who is wearing makeup or who has expensive clothes, who is "really" working out and who is just wasting their time (hint: no one - even that girl who played games on her tablet for two hours on the elliptical got what she wanted out of it).
What's the point of judging someone else's workout? I assume everyone there is doing exactly what they want and good for them.

I always wonder about the full makeup...do they just not work out or do I sweat more than the normal girl. Lol If I'm working out after work, my makeup is the last thing on my mind. I just get ready to workout and do it. I pay no mind to how I look after. I'll wipe the sweat off my face when I'm done. Taking an extra second to wipe my eye makeup off pre-workout hasn't crossed my mind.

Eyeshadow is a must, because my eyes are small and deepset. I cannot wear waterproof eye makeup (due to the surgery - it's too difficult to remove) so I have to use the type that removes - and tends to run - easily. But I knew that before I agreed to the surgery.

I'm not judging, it's mostly a mix jealousy and wondering if I'm a freak with how much my face sweats.
Though in college those girls with full makeup, nice outfits, that selected treadmills overlooking the weights area and chatted about the guys amused me. I was way more subtle...picking the one behind the guy with the nicest ass lol

I generally dont' notice, but I did notice the girl yakking next to me on the elliptical. Then I went all mean girl. If she wasn't talking loud enough for me to hear her over my iPod, I probably wouldn't have taken a second look.

And yes.....if someone is chatting and playing in the middle of a stuffed room during Body Pump is not going to participate, then they can move the hell out of the way for those of us who could use their space for its intended purpose.

I used to wonder about girls who looked so perfect at the gym as well. Then I watched a couple of episodes of Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. These girls ran 5 miles on a track in the Dallas heat and most did it under 30 minutes. Their hair and make-up still looked amazing. There are just some girls who got it going on like that. I thought they were just a bunch of pretty girls who got lucky with their genes, but they work hard and are real athletes. Kudos to anyone who can pull that off.

It's also the type of makeup they use. TV/movie makeup is manufactured differently from the stuff we buy at CVS, Walgreens and the department stores. It's applied with sponges, brushes and sometimes sprayed on, for an even "coating" and to better hide flaws in this HD/digital age. And yes, those cheerleader types are just perfecter, too. Good athletes, though. Back to the OP: the exercise you do, and where you do it, is immaterial if you don't love to do it to the point where you will do it regularly. And it can take weeks, even months, to see a real difference in yourself when you add/change routines. It's about dedication and patience.

People often ask me if I'm ok like 2 hours later because my face is still red. It still is. Just the way I am. My blood vessles are close to the surface or whatever, so it's how I roll. I'm in perfectly good shape, its just the way my body is. You're not strange.
