And one more thing- guns don't kill people, people kill people right? So who the fuck is responsible for this one? A 5 year old?

Irresponsible parents and grandparents - plain & simple.
There's no excuse.

The boy found his grandfather’s .22-caliber magnum revolver that was being kept on a shelf built into the headboard in the master bedroom, Nodaway County Sheriff Darren White told The Washington Post. The baby was in a crib in the same room when the gun went off, and a bullet struck him in the head. Just an 'accident' of course......
The baby was shot in Elmo, MO. Population 168. 168 reasons to need a quick access headboard gun stash

Exactly! It's not like they're living in a war-zone. The weapon(s) could have been locked in a gun safe/gun case or have a trigger-lock on the weapon.
I guess it's better to have your weapon laying on your headboard - especially with little curious minds roaming around.
I live in Canada where gun permits/ownership are more strict - but I would never consider leaving a weapon that "handy" for someone to use.
DH and I used to do competitive target shooting with hand-guns - this would not happen in our home.

Well, that is the problem. You can secure your guns, but you don't know what your idiot neighbors or anyone else is doing with their guns. Guns are not the problem, irresponsible people are the problem as SL said. And, anyone with a brain knows that toddlers and kids like to root through drawers and are curious .

And I agree. Guns are not toys. Why are they selling pink guns now? And, there should be an age where kids are not allowed to handle weapons. Yes, taking a 12 yr old hunting in my area after he/she has had hunter safety course and only with a rifle, yes. But, letting a small child shoot a weapon, even at a rifle range for "fun" seems like a bad idea to me. We don't need more gun laws and no we don't need gun control. We just need more common sense.

I think that adults who do not prevent their toddlers from accessing firearms should be prosecuted for criminally negligent homicide. I have no problem placing responsibility for these accidents where it belongs. It's still an accident. And still not worth surrendering any part of our right to keep and bear arms.

The first time I saw a pink gun (presumably to appeal to women) I had two thoughts: a) It's sexist as you can get; and b) it is one of the WORST ideas anyone has ever thought of precisely because it might be confused with a toy gun.

I am sitting next to a loaded .45 right now. When I retire for the evening, I will not leave it on the end table. It goes in a lockbox next to my bed which has a biometric unlock feature. Easy for me to access, and as a practical matter- impossible for anyone else to access.

You can't govern stupidity. I disagree with the love of guns in this country and the NRA's powerful, paranoid lobby, but this is a case of keeping your LOADED guns secure.

Rule #1: ALL guns are loaded. Rule #2: Guns are NOT toys. Rule #3: NEVER point a gun at someone. My kids, one of them who is 5, can recite these rules by rote. I think in the case of a grandparent, they've got to be aware of what kind of kids they've raised, what kind of people those kids have married, and how they're raising their kids. I never forget that MY kids know the rules, but I never assume other people's kids know shit.

I see. So you carry it with you during the day. Do you feel a need for carrying a gun around? I'm just curious.

You never know when someone might be crawling along in their car in the left-hand lane instead of pulling over. Maybe the gun is a more effective method for him to make his point than using his air-horn.
As for pink grips on guns, I had a Ruger with a pink grip for target shooting (hangs head in shame). It was my "girly" gun.
(It was also safely locked away in a case plus had a trigger lock on it - it wasn't lying on my bedside table).
Even when driving to/from the range, the case was locked in the trunk.

And that is all I advocate- it needs to have criminal consequences- which in a lot of places it does not- just an accident move on. The ease at which law enforcement let these incidents go and casually dismiss these events as tragic accidents bothers me.

While it is smart to teach these rules to any child- they are not a substitute for responsible gun ownership. A gun in a nightstand drawer, on a shelf, in a headboard, in a glove compartment, in a purse, etc. is not a secured weapon.
I assume you agree.

Right now here north of Houston they are breaking into phone stores and stealing money, they hit about 4 this afternoon near here today. They said while folks were in them shopping, I know the Verizon store I was in the other day had an off duty cop working in there. There have been all kinds of holdups around here since I've been back. I never saw it this bad when we lived here. And this is an affluent area. I guess if you are going to steal this would be the place to do it.
I have a gun with me but haven't been carrying it, that might change. If they are breaking into them they are closed right- or are you saying these are armed robberies?
IMO regardless of the media crimes like this are dropping and you are safer than ever. If you feel the need to carry- then do so. I don't buy the 'things are getting worse' angle because they are not. I have a carry permit, and I only carry when travelling and that does include driving to and from work. I have rarely carried on my person- do not see a need. I do appreciate the right to do so and have no problem with those that do- unless of course they are open carry assholes

This one was in a headboard. The one before that was in a purse. The one before THAT was under the couch. People are morons, and every one probably thought they were responsible gun owners.

And with all of the dead people no one has been prosecuted. In a normal society when someone is killed there are consequences. Just not here. Ooops! That seems to work.

If you own a gun, you are responsible for the consequences of when it is discharged.

These are both the offspring of a "pants shitting gun and Bible grabbing scared little [mouse]". There's one less offspring now. "Darwin at work," as you've boldly pointed out in the past. Maybe he'd have grown up to be a Republican. That's one less lunatic voter to deal with, right? You're certainly not an enemy of the Second Amendment, and you admittedly don't give a rat's fanny about any of your countrymen besides your friends and family, hence I can only assume this is yet another celebration of Darwinism in action. I appreciate your inviting me to the celebration. I'm just happy you're happy.

I just find that it is better to have something and not need it, than to need it and not have it. I'm only going to use about a gallon of gas today. I don't feel the need for 12 gallons, but the tank is full.
