I didn't say there's a vehicle without a blind spot, I said I won't buy one with huge ones. There's always a blind spot, but I'd rather not have one you can miss a whole grown person walking by in.

My mommy van is horrible for blind spots.
ETA: Add road salt and sand spray, and I can't see shit.

Things kids say: My step-kids mom and step-dad recently purchased an Ford Expedition that looks exactly like our Ford Expedition (which I think is weird, but not part of the story). My 10 year old step daughter says, "It looks a lot like yours except it's clean."

I told her that if she was riding in the new one, I didn't expect it to stay clean for long.

I've never backed into a parking space. I'm fairly certain I would damage the vehicles on either side. I also suck at parallel parking. I have only once in 30 years of driving backed into a vehicle in a parking lot. Sadly it wasn't when I was a teen. It was last winter but it was a light tap & caused no damage & the guy was very nice about it & said no worries.

I think they are making cars with larger blind spots now on the assumption that people will have back up cameras. DS told me once that my job was boring - all I do is cook and clean. I have a back up camera. Which is covered with road sludge.

Truly trying to not be snarky, but why would you buy a vehicle with such a blind spot that you can't back out safely??!?? I've never backed into a parking space and never hit anyone either, oblivious old people or not. (I work and shop at the Walmart in a very popular retirement area that's already in a popular vacation area) To add to not being snarky but why buy a vehicle that you can't see over the dash without a booster seat

I think son is too reliant on the back up camera in the honda. Need to have him drive flex more.

She also had to share it with someone who was 6' (she was 5'ish when they bought the car). Granted she doesn't have a liscense any more because the week before she was going to renew it last year she broke her hip. But up until last year she would about once a year drive the 11 blocks down to the grocery store if she had to (usually the owner of the grocery store would bring whatever she wanted home because he lived next door ... life in a small town and all). Anyway, my point is it might not have been as bad when the person bought the vehicle.

A lot of people buy the car not being able to see over the dash they just have to have that big ole car - I wasn't talking little old ladies but people in general.

Oh, definitely. It's technically much, much easier to back out of a space. You don't need to be as precise and the maneuver is much less difficult.
What I'm trying to teach him is that in driving, there are some things you can control and some things you can't control. So evaluate the situation to assess risk for the things you can't control and try to do your best with what you can control to minimize the risk from those uncontrollables. In a parking situation where there are many oblivious pedestrians (think Florida - hordes of old people and tourists), you can't control who will wander out behind your car unexpectedly. Plus, in my SUV there are some blind spots that can hide a pedestrian approaching. Add that to the risk that you may be parked in between two vans or other vehicles that block your rear/side vision and you may be stuck backing out somewhat blindly just hoping nobody steps behind you at the wrong time. Again, because you can't control that.
So I want him to learn the technical skills he needs (backing up precisely - it's not that hard with a little practice) so that he can minimize the risk from the things he can't control (unseen pedestrians and tall, vision blocking vehicles parking next to you). When you're in the center aisle, you have a pretty good view of what is around and can choose your time to back into a space. Once you're parked head-in to a space, you've lost that good line of sight and with the added blind spots and lack of control over pedestrians and tall vehicles next to you, you're doing a much riskier move to back out.
Highly dependent on type of car you drive (some have very few blind spots when backing) and likelihood of frequent pedestrian traffic in the location.
Completely agree, plus you've had your clear visual much closer to the time you start moving when you're backing in vs backing out. No stopping to put the groceries away, buckle up, situate your purse, etc. We're required to take driver training at work, and they indicate that after an initial spike in parking lot accidents the first week when mandatory reverse parking is installed, the accident rate drops significantly. We don't mandate it at our offices, just our field locations, but many of our vendors mandate it at the office. My only issue with back-in parking is drivers tailgating me down the aisle and getting in my way of backing in since they think I'm passing that spot up. And for Chocolate Lover, my biggest blind spot issues when I can't back in (angled parking, mostly) are not my own car, but the monstrosities parked to my left and right.

Maybe I'm just a genius driver, but even backing out blinded by monstrosities, I've never had an accident in a parking lot. Aside from safer or not, I'd never get the space if I pulled up past it to get into it, some fool behind me would whip into it right after I passed it. Just a whole different world where I live I guess.

I was on vacation on the gulf, waiting to turn out of the hotel parking lot, when a lady in an Expedition backed out of a parking space into my car. She didn't see my car at all until she got out of her vehicle because she knew she had hit something because she felt the impact. When I felt the impact and saw that Expedition in my rearview mirror, I cussed up a storm. In my head, my kids were in the car. I couldn't stay angry once I got out my car, because she was really upset (especially when she saw my son in the back seat) and apologetic. She said she wanted to get rid of the Expedition because it was so hard to see what's behind her when she backs up.
Fortunately, it only made my bumper pop out slightly on one side, but the whole bumper had to be replaced. Her insurance paid for it, no issues on my end.
That was over a decade ago, but I've been wary of SUV's on parking lots ever since.
I tore a hole in the bumper on my current car not long after I bought it. A pole mounted in concrete jumped behind my car while I was backing out of a parking space and I caught the corner of the concrete. Stupid pole! Lol
I was only able to teach one of my kids to drive. The other one wrecked my nerves too much by not listening. it wasn't just me. Her grandfather, who would move mountains for her, gave up on teaching her to drive too.
Random thought..... posting from a tablet sucks!

Just got back from a trip with several other families and since many of them have teens, had to tell this story. After they were done laughing, several of them talked about backing into spaces. Turns out it's company policy at several large companies that deal with road safety. I forgot what the phrase was, but that theory (backing into the space is much safer than backing out) is part of some sort of safety "system". No idea what the system is, but when everybody's home, I'll ask them so I can torture my teen with it.

There are a few different terms, but the one I've heard most often is "First Move Forward".

By 15 I already had a couple years experience on the farm backing up tractors/trucks to various trailers, planters and tillers, not to mention hill jumping, donuts in tight spaces and pulling sleds behind cars.
Driver Ed was a piece of cake after those experiences.

Backing out: not something I want to emulate. (great comment by your son btw, especially if said deadpan with a straight face!) Yep. Totally deadpan, with straight face and slightly pompous, deep intonation... sounded like an announcer for Masterpiece Theatre.
He's kind of a teenage jerk, but he's a FUNNY teenage jerk.
