did you miss the part where there is no way I'm getting things from people that I don't know, so freecycle is not an option 99% of the time.....the chances of me needing X right when someone I know is getting rid of X is pretty slim. OK....relax please! I didn't miss anything, in no way, shape or form would I ever suggest that you will ever need anything from freecycle, second hand stores or any other such places. I was simply saying that there ARE many things offered through freecycle that are not exactly garbage. and I never said there weren't...just like the people who can find great deals at thrift stores - but it takes lots of visits (I never find anything good)....however, what I've noticed is that people decide in 6 months they need to replace x so they start looking around for x, checking freecycle/craigslist/etc., until they find what they want at a price they want. I decide I need x and I want it now, not spend months looking around to find one. I just did this with a car. talked to insurance company on monday (when they finally got the report from the body shop), worked out all the details, signed the paperwork wednesday at my agent's office, purchased car thursday night (had looked at cars the previous friday). went to carmax, test drove 3 cars to decide what make/model we wanted, and were done. I don't have the shop around/compare prices/wait for the 95% off sale gene, and I'm good with that. I also don't have the random shopping gene so it's not a big problem.

I do get tired of "shopping". I can't do thrift shops either, I just don't have the patience. But when it comes to big items, I don't think I'll sleep at night knowing that I could get it for much cheaper.
I try as best as I can balance the cost vs time thing, I don't know how successful I am.
On a side note - I really wish I could learn the art of negotiation.

The negotiation is so easy. Shoot an email to the person selling the item. Are you willing to sell it for $x? No? ok. Let me know if you change your mind. Then on to the next item.

I was talking to someone at work about the car I was buying and I said it was worth it to me to pay an extra $1000 (or whatever) at Carmax to not have to drive to look at different cars, maybe get a mechanic to look at it, arrange my own financing, etc., and they had the same opinion.

We bought our first couch ever new at the age of 31. Before that we only had futons. We also bought our first bed at the age of 31. Before that we always slept with our mattresses on the floor. Our house is a mismatch of ikea storage units, thrift store furniture and family hand me downs. One day, I'm going to have a grown up house! I swear!!

I just don't know that many people who get rid of furniture. So everything is bought new. But I am not opposed to used furniture. You can always upholster the fabric/leather, refinish the pieces and sometimes there is just sentimental value attached to pieces. So I never say "I would NEVER ...", "How could you all ...", "Not in my tastes ..." etc. To each his own and to his own taste.

I have no relatives still alive that I would get any furniture from so no worry about sentimental (and when I cleaned out my parent's house after my mother died, there were no piees that I was so attached to that I would have paid to ship 200+ miles to me or figure out how to transport back with me). I don't know that I've ever seen any of my friends offer up anything (there was a weight set once but her DH promised it to someone else). I've never got rid of functional furniture except once (kitchen set was too big for the house I'm currently in). I only gave it away because the charity wouldn't take it (one of the chairs had a stain).

Our couch was new, it's just a cheap couch. We bought it because DH managed to destroy the frame of our futon. His solution was to nail it back together. .poorly. Since we were about to have Gwen I didn't want a couch that had nails sticking out of it in every direction.
I want a better couch. I just haven't found one in a price range I am willing to stomach with two kids and big dogs. I can handle my $200 couch looking like it does. I am not going to handle a $1k+ couch having baby/dog barf on it.
I'm the one that has to live with it, not other people. So if they don't grasp why I don't just run out and buy a new couch oh well.

You SO don't know me One couch is done in cow print, another has hay print on it, the chair in the living room has lambs and foals done up against green and brown (midwest colors yawl!!!) AND I have a bedspread that has cow tipping pictures on it. Gotta stay true to the roots

Our next craigslist purchase is going to be dining chairs. We bought a set off of craigs list a few years ago, but they ended up being shit and they are falling apart. Someone recently was selling a whole dining room set, that was awesome, but I just wanted the chairs. They said they wouldn't split the set, so I will keep looking.

These are the chairs I like. The person has been trying to sell the set on craigslist for a few months. My thought is that they may change their mind of selling the chairs separately if it takes they too long and they haven't sold anything.

I got a really nice dining set off Craigslist a few years ago. Solid oak table and 6 chairs. They still had the receipt from buying it new for $1500 (for just the table) and they were only asking $500 because they were moving and it had to go. The chairs alone were $150/each new.

So, most of my life I've had scrounged furniture. Hand me downs from my mom, craigslist, garage sales, etc. Stuff you leave behind when you move... stuff you grab off the side of the road, etc. I've always objected to how expensive furniture is, even stuff from IKEA that is crappy and disposable. My spouse had a futon/coffee table set he bought cheap on craigslist after his divorce, and that's been in our family/TV room for 8 years or so lol. It hurts my ass and the dog has ripped a few holes in it. I do have couch in our formal living room that I bought new at TJMaxx once, it was in the scratch and dent clearance bin. So we finally decided to buy a NEW REAL honest-to-goodness NEW perfect couch for the TV room. We got it at JCPenny's - and although it's pretty ugly, it's durable, reclines, and is a 'decent' color (not cream or white). It was on sale for 40% off, plus an extra 10% off. (What's with stuff ALWAYS on sale? The SA told us the sale ended yesterday but starts again Weds?? lol) All in all it was more than $1000 but less than $1500 including tax and delivery ($125) so I figured that wasn't too bad. I'm almost 40, I deserve a real couch, right? yes you deserve a real couch (I can't even imagine not buying my first couch until 40) but why did you get one that's ugly? And importantly - how comfy is it to sit on and take naps on?

But, I have a big eat-in pennisula between the kitchen and dining area that you could fit 4 bar stools at. We just had two. That's all we needed with the two of us and then one kid in a high chair. Now we have seating for 10 and still always sit at the bar area. Actually, the kids sit, I stand on the kitchen side and eat standing up most of the time. Easier to serve/clean up.

Not difficult to understand.

I'll be 46 in a few weeks and have yet to buy a new couch. I had a piece of shit used one in my first house for awhile and then bought a futon. I got a decent used set from my grandmother's estate when I moved into the new house and now I have ex-husbands "man couch" (a big leather sectional). I hope it lasts a long, long time because it's comfy.
