Not just girls. Depending on the color/shades of yarn chosen, those would be perfect for little boy toddler as well.
Those bright rainbow ones for example, would work for either a boy or a girl. Or they could be done in "camo" colors if you're adamant on them looking like "boy" slippers.
But at 2, 3 or 4 yrs old, there's no rush to pigeon-hole kids into specific gender roles based on the old "pink/blue" rule.

Yes, I looked at those links already last night.
I was hoping someone had the actual instructions they could post, or a link to a free pattern online or on a PDF download.
I could do the PayPal and get the download version for $5 or $6 - I was just hoping there was a free pattern online out there. I haven't found one yet - but I haven't finished searching either.

Well, all it took was a bit more persistence.
The link below is for crocodile stitch booties pattern (from infant to toddler, children's or adult sizes.
The free pattern/instructions are printed about mid-page: Crocodile Stitch Crochet Booties

Snowflake_Lassie.. Below is a tutorial video of a similar pair of booties as above without buttons. There is also a link below the same video for the written pattern. And it's free! The pattern for bootie in the post can be bought. It is a Bonita pattern. I believe the pattern in the video below can easily be created to look just as good as Bonita's. I will post the set I make following the video below once I make them.

I would suggest a fleece blanket with the single crochet edging. It is relatively, inexpensive, simple to make, and easy to use for a long time.
The video wouldn't load so I didn't link it.
Or sew a decorative edge around a double fleece blanket. That eliminates any strings that baby can get a hold of and suck.

I just purchased some steel hooks so I could do some of those blankets, Artemis Windsong. I also found a pattern for slippers/booties using a felt bottom and then crocheting the top.

I used to knit all the time when I lived in Boston and made a lot of sweaters. When I moved to TX, it really was too hot to do any knitting or crocheting (I know how to do both), so took up cross stitch because it wasn't as heavy. I did a couple of pictures that my mom had framed, and I was looking at them when I went home a couple weeks ago. I can't believe I did something that intricate....there is a wall on one of the pictures that is made out of a dozen different shades of beige - I'm not sure my eyes could do that now!
Anyway, after I got sick, I went into knitpicks.com and ordered about $200 of yarn, thinking that I could pick up knitting again. It would be something that could keep my hands busy. The one thing that I didn't count on was that I was on narcotics almost the entire first year and me on narcotics gives me the attention span of a gnat. So there is a box of gorgeous, expensive yarn downstairs for me to play with....but I don't have the time with school.

A tiny puppy sweater? I could crochet or knit that little number up in 1/2 hr or less and get it assembled.
It's basically just two small square panels joined together - leaving 2 "armhole" openings and a neck opening. Easy-peasy.

. I posted the picture of the puppy because (s)he was so darn cute what with the little forelegs hanging out of the sweater.

It was a cute newbie pup. The sweater was an added bonus to the cuteness factor.

My knitting friends got caught up in that penguin sweater thing a while back in (I think?) Australia. I would love to knit teensy penguin sweaters! But it ended up being an old article and they'd been so inundated with sweaters they didn't need any, lol. Always thought I should knit my cat something to wear, but that wouldn't end well.

Haaahahaha. We bought Halloween fairy wings to put on the cat a few years ago.... when we put her down on the floor, she took one step and flopped over and refused to move. So funny!!!

ETA: At the present time, Im crocheting preemie hats for the NICU unit at the hospital: I've made a couple angel gowns/hats as I've had the mental energy to do it. My friend in Paupa New Guinea said they really need hats and sleep sacks (basically larger hats that the baby fits down into) for little ones born early. I keep meaning to work up some of those to send over to her. I am terribly slow at crochet. I wonder if it's the way I hold my hooks or something. It will take me 30 minutes to do one granny square. It's a nice down-time hobby but it just takes me forever to get a full project done.

Sam_2.0, I've done some of the preemie pouches too - they're also called sleep sacks or cocoons.
ETA: If you hold your crochet hook like a pen, it's easier to hook the yarn and do the stitches - you can work the stitches quite quickly once you develop a rhythm.

I knit preemie and chemo caps for a local hospital as part of a church ministry. It's a great combination: endless demand, good cause, and tax-deductible.
A few weeks ago I got a book out of the library called "Stashbuster Knits"; there are tons of interesting color patterns so you can use up small quantities of yarn by combining them in patterns. So far I'm just doing two-color combinations and that's complicated enough; I've had to rip out more than a few rows because I got off-course! I love the results, though, and having to pay attention to the pattern keeps my brain occupied.
I've managed so far to avoid the unmanageable stash problem (even though we've got a wonderful locally-owned yarn shop) with the simple rule that my stash has to fit into a standard plastic grocery bag. I don't buy more yarn unless there's room in the bag for it.

@athena53, another good stashbuster idea is to crochet trivets and potholders. Fast, easy, plenty of online free patterns and good for in-between projects I go through my stash on a regular basis and crochet trivets and potholders. They are wonderful gifts to friends and family too.

You just have to knit (or crochet) a simple square to make a trivet or pot-holder - any size you want. I'd also suggest sewing 2 squares together to make the trivet or pot-holder thicker - to prevent burns - either skin burns, or burns to tables/counters when you place a hot dish or casserole on the trivet. You can also add a loop in one corner for hanging them on a hook for storage. .

I need to bump this thread!!! Little bro and my best friend are coming over this weekend - stitch 'n bitch night!!! I will have to post some pics of my most recent projects. I need some new inspiration - can't really think of anything I want to do for Christmas yet. DH really wants a blanket since I've not made him one yet. Royals colors. I kind of want to find a new pattern. I was thinking of the tapestry stitch, but that would make one SUPER thick blanket.

I forgot about this thread! I haven't been knitting much lately and it makes me sad... combination of no time, burnout, and shoulder issue that comes and goes.
Sam you crochet, right? I don't or I would give you some recommendations.. I think I'm mostly not knitting anything for Christmas this year, but I want to knit my dad a pair of socks since he's the only family member I haven't made any for yet. Not sure I'll have the time or shoulder strength for it. Sounds weird but with the shoulder pain I get playing my violin, holding my arm tightly against my body as I knit actually makes it worse. I've tried to be conscious of loosening up a bit but sometimes I can't break it.
Have you made any toys? I always want to try some of the little doll or animal knitting patterns but I'm bad at staying focused on patterns.
