My regular job is often dirty. I have to wear 100% natural fibers (cotton, wool, etc) outside of the (supposed to be provided) arc flash clothing.
So, I over time, I have collected several 100% cotton shirts and sweatshirts that I would not wear otherwise. 100% cotton sweatshirts aren't cheap/easy to come by, so when I've found acceptable ones at second hand stores, I've grabbed them. It's kind of like "farm clothes"/"yard work"/"play clothes". They are fine to wear when you don't care how you look/if they get ripped, stained, etc. But, if you didn't have to wear them every day, you'd only have one or two, not ten.
Right now, because I've not been wearing them for the office job, they are washed and folded, and just sitting there. I want to start getting rid of stuff, but if I get rid of these and go back to field work, I have to replace them, wasting either a bunch of time, money, or both.
There are shirts, pants, sweatshirts, etc, and I could easily fill a couple trash bags. I'd keep a couple, for yard work, home electrical work, etc, but not all.
On the other hand, I have more "nice" clothing than I would need if not working in the office (I actually had to go buy a couple shirts and sweaters, my normal wear is not office attire). So, I have several of those that can go if I end up working at home or back in the field (I'd keep a few for nice occasion stuff, or days when I would have to drive in to the office).
Anyway, just another reason I really want to know where I'll be at the end of the month, I want to get rid of crap!

As I sit here in my 100% cotton sweatpants, purchased at the Gap over 20 years ago, I caution you to not toss those clothes if you do actually use them for yard work and such. It's nearly impossible to find anything sturdy and cotton these days. I for one loathe other fabrics. I wish I hadn't been so quick to toss their predecessors. I wish I had a tote full of comfy cotton clothes to look forward to instead of this last remnant. On the job front. Best wishes. You are in a hard place and you don't have a lot of good options to choose from. Keep us updated, please.

Thanks I have two piles-- one I'll keep even if I no longer do field work, one I want to get rid of. I agree, good sturdy clothing can be hard to find (but I don't need as many as I have, for sure!) I filled up three garbage bags of clothing today. I've gained weight (and I know a big reason was depression over this job situation, something I didn't want to admit to myself before, because I thought it made me weak). Anyway, I've been working out every work day for the last three months, and hopefully, once this situation is cleared up, I can start to see results from that. I took a ton of clothes I don't fit into right now, looked at them, and asked myself if I could wear them after I have the body I'm working to get back, would I? If they weren't going to make me feel good (frumpy, whatever), I got rid of them. I have more to go, but have a ton of other stuff to get done now that I'm finally up to it this weekend.

Living with the future in such limbo is one of the most difficult things to deal with - I recommend putting the clothes into a plastic bin and stashing the bin in the back corner of your garage or closet. You can then forget about them until the time cones that you need them.
I also want to compliment you for handling such a difficult situation so well for so long - kudos to you.
