... I also need to add a pet fund since we just adopted a rescue pup. We're very new to this pet thing, but it's going extremely well so far. For those with pets, is it better to have pet insurance, or to just set aside some savings for vet/emergency bills?
Congratulations on adopting your rescue pup! Thanks for raising the topic of pet insurance and pet funds. We've never had it, but I'm hoping to hear some experiences of those who have. Our only pet is Rusty our 6 year old boxer boy. So far we have cash flowed his expenses, and our Care Credit card could be used for interest free financing on anything that is too much to handle in a month's time. But at his age if the insurance doesn't make sense for us, I'd like to at least get a "pet fund" rolling.

I have to sit down and push my money around to the right places and then I'll post my last update for the year.
It's been a rough month so far. I had exams and then my father passed away unexpectedly. It's been a whirlwind 2 weeks to say the least.
I was just going thru the pantry as my dad was a shopper. There was so much food in there that was A) beyond the expiration date by years and B) stuff I won't eat. The stuff that was still "good" is going to a food pantry. The other stuff we were just going to throw out (after we asked everyone to take what they wanted) when my friend suggested putting it for free on Craigslist. I put 15 bags of food on my driveway and it was picked up in less than 2hrs. I would encourage anyone who has things they don't want and can't really be donated to put it on CL. Everything I set out was picked up by someone within hours.

Thanks to all for the input about the pet insurance. Definitely starting a pet fund at least.
I was told that pets pick their people. I wasn't sure I believed it, but I do now. I wanted a female large breed puppy. We brought home a 2 to 3-year old male terrier mix. He's pretty awesome.

speechchick71 I am so sorry for your loss of your father. You were such a huge help to him and your mom during her illness and death. The time you gave them will always be very special. I am so glad you found a way to put the food to use by the CL ad.

speechchick71, I am so very sorry about your father. (((hugs)))
My XH and kids got me my pup for Christmas, many Christmases ago. It was mostly a complete surprise. They went out on Christmas Eve to pick her up. They had an empty box already wrapped in the garage. The top flaps of the box were loose. When they finally got home, they popped the pup in the box, came into the house with it, and handed it to me. An 8 week old pup popped her head out of the box. I took her from the box and held her up. She peed on me. I like to say she marked me as her "person." XH and the kids may have chosen her, but she chose me.

I suck. Had to raid my 2015 Roth deposit so I'm not at 100% anymore. Bc it's so late in the year, I know I won't get back to 100%. So take away a rose, delete my Total is: $24,508 (goal $30,000).

I refuse to do that! You totally do not suck!!! Once won, roses stay. So do dancing bananas. I have said time and again that we don't fail if we move money around to different accounts, or even if we spend it, because all savings will be spent eventually -- sometimes even for its intended purpose. I gather you moved money from your Roth to pay down some debt. It's a win that you had it to move in the first place, and a win that you used it so productively.

I had 5492 left on a brokerage account loan at 8.5% interest. Could've been worse. Fortunately(?) I could raid it and hopefully replace before 4/15 And with that, Happy Holidays y'all!

chomping at the bit to get the 2016 savings rolling. Interestingly there are 53 Fridays in 2016. I'm thinking of using that detail to add one more "22" to the line up of the weekly savings. Then at the end of the year I should have $1400 instead of $1378...I just love an even number ETA: I looked up pet insurance for our boxer boy Rusty. It's @$28/month for a $5000 coverage with $500 annual deductible, or @$58/month for $10000 w/ $200 deductible. It could be worth it, but it's just too much for me to puzzle out, and have to worry about dealing with the insurance company for reimbursements, possible denials, etc... For now I'm designating a Rusty fund with a goal of $600 for 2016. I will continue to cash flow his vet visits and preventive RX for heartworm and fleas. Then each year I'll try to grow the fund more.

Great, Sugi, and thanks. And can we lock this one after I do the updates and shoutouts?
For anyone wanting to know what time of day the thread will be closed down, I will probably do the updates and shoutouts sometime in the early afternoon of Jan. 3, ET. If you've ever seen what goes on while I work on things, there are multiple "update in progress" notes as I save the revisions so I don't lose it all. Once it says "Update" that will be the final update. Shoutouts come after that. And then, that's all, and we move over to 2016.
Fresh start, reflection, and so forth.

Last update for 2015. I DID IT! I just sent my last check for my Roth so it's fully funded for the first time in many years. My bank account is fat which is good because my car got hit when it was sitting on the street yesterday. It was unable to be driven which really stinks. At least I have my dad's car that I can drive. Now I have the money for repairs or a car if needed. I have to readjust my plan for 2016 because I'll now be taking over the mortgage and bills for my dad's house. I'll still be able to save but not nearly at the rate as I did this year. UGH! So many new details to think about! Be safe tonight if you are going out. May 2016 be a safe, happy, healthy, and wealthy new year for everyone! UPDATE: speechchick71 $20,405.00 12/31/15 (goal=$20,005, started 1/1/2015) | 27-Nov | 31-Dec | Goal | How much to go | % Met | Weekly Challenge | $11,760.00 | $13,780.00 | $13,780.00 | $0.00 | 100% | $25/week | $1,075.00 | $1,125.00 | $725.00 | -$400.00 | 155% | Roth 2015 | $4,750.00 | $5,500.00 | $5,500.00 | $0.00 | 100% | | - | - | - | - | | Totals | $17,585.00 | $20,405.00 | $20,005.00 | ($400.00) | 102% | |

Serious this time, 12/31/15, $11,121 (Goal $14,498)Resolution for 2016: don't have a savings goal for CC paydown. Keep the two races separate. Having them blended like this (a savings account to drain at some point to pay down the CCs) mixes my Savers goals with my Racers goals and results in not meeting either goal. I always pay my mortgage in person. The bank is close to where I live and a branch is close to my work, so it's easy to drive up and get a receipt that shows how much of my mortgage payment went to principal and how much went to interest. The principal payment is going up. I am thinking of adding a few dollars to each payment to round up to the next $10 point, and when my regular payment actually gets to that point, adding the few dollars to get it to the next $10 point. For example, the amount that goes to principal next time is $296.26. I can add $3.74 to my payment, which should pay off $300 in principal with that payment. When it reaches a point where my normal payment would pay off $300 in principal without adding anything extra, I will start rounding up to pay $310 in principal. Baby steps, folks. Baby steps. I am pleased that I managed to save for, and pay off, my deferred cost purchase (0% interest for 12 months) well before it was due.
