sealy Thank you for the compliment! Good job getting it started. YES, Saving is fun, which really helps curb spending. Now that I'm more of a saver, when I'm tempted to buy something I can talk myself out of it because there is that satisfaction of knowing which savings goal I can apply that money to. Good morning Savers I hope you have a good start to your week.

Nalto 8/20/15 $1,236.23 (Goal=$10,000)
Well, it happened. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I was basically down to nothing in my savings. So, what did I do? I blew it all up. Went into full blown super-saver mode. Cleaned out the apartment (and my stuff from my parents place that was left behind) and started selling it all left and right. I was this close to selling the car, but then I figured that I could hold onto it for eight more months until I get married. I had an epiphany; it hit me that I'm broke. Sure, I might have a decent little amount in my retirement funds, but you know what? It doesn't matter. Granted, I don't normally walk this tight of a rope next to brokedom, it's just been an unusual summer, but still. I HATED the feeling.
And you know what? Selling off all that stuff, it felt great, it felt so liberating. I had the financial peace back, to be sure, but I also created my own little minimalist bubble. No more junk filling space, no more clutter everywhere. So here I am. Looking ahead, hitting my goal by April 1st (the month of the wedding) is gonna require some extra savings, but I'm up for the challenge.
Seeing all of your progress (or motivation when progress doesn't happen) really keeps me going, I love to read all about it! Hope you all enjoy these final days of summer, and keep on saving!

Excited that next week I'll advance into the $6K range and tackle the last of my 40's in the weekly challenge Still recovering from the vacation expenses, and just got the proposed tax bills for next year and it is ugly. Nalto 8/25/15 $2,486.23 (Goal=$10,000)Payday today, so instead of budgeting this in September like YNAB tells me to, I'm budgeting it for September right now, and moving the money. I'm just too excited to move it to savings to wait, it's like Christmas! I'm gonna scrounge around and see if I can come up with $13.77 in the next few days...I'd really love to hit 25% of my goal before August is up! I should get a little bit of help with the interest from the account, but that's probably not going to be much. Happy saving everyone!

UPDATE: speechchick71 $9350.00 8/21/15 $ (goal=$20,005, started 1/1/2015) | 24-July | 21-Aug | Goal | How much to go | % Met | Weekly Challenge | $4,650.00 | $5,950.00 | $13,780.00 | $7,830.00 | 43% | $25/week | $850.00 | $900.00 | $725.00 | -$175.00 | 124% | Roth 2015 | $0.00 | $2,500.00 | $5,500.00 | $3,000.00 | 45% | | - | - | - | - | | Totals | $5,500.00 | $9,350.00 | $20,005.00 | $10,655.00 | 47% | |
Because of the huge drop in the market, I pulled some money out of savings to drop a large amount in my Roth. I might actually do it again in a couple weeks and just get it completely funded. I have a feeling that my spending is going to really drop now that school has started again. I am gone 4 nights/week until about 8pm. It's only been the first week but I am already stressed about the amount of time being sucked from my day from just 2 classes. I don't know if I should be doing a countdown yet but only 15 more weeks to go.

Sorry for so many updates, but I did it! I hit the 25% mark before September! September and October should be full of overtime opportunities, so hopefully that'll help bridge the gap between what I'm projected to be at and what I want to be at...have a wonderful weekend everyone, and keep on saving!

For the past 5 years I've got my property tax refund on August 20th. Well, August 20th has come and gone and nothing. I went to the "Where's my refund" site and it says mid-September to October 8th. Shoot. I'm going to have to do some damage control to get my budget to work for September. There will be little to no saving and I'm not sure I'll be able to pay that $364 back to my Christmas fund either. We'll see what I can slash from everywhere else.

In November 1, 2000 I moved and I was in a damn tailspin cause I barely had first and last months rent. I made it but just barely. Now my LL told me on Sunday that the house is being sold where I live, so I gotta move. Guess what, cause I saved on WIR savers, I'm not worried about first and last months rent, I got it already in my EF.
I feel fucking fantastic, and this time it's going to be a crazy ass adventure. lol

Hey Savers, The end of August is here. I will be doing updates on Friday evening or Saturday morning. If you can get your updates in by Friday morning, they will be reflected in the smilies and shoutouts.
Where did the summer go? Not that I am complaining. I absolutely HATE to mow the lawn, and I am close to being done. I finally paid someone to come and do some much needed cleanup in the backyard. I have three big spruces and they were getting really big around at the bottom and starting to look scraggly so I had about 5 feet of branches removed from each of them. I have a six-foot privacy fence so there's no loss of privacy which was a concern to me because the back of my neighbor's house is in a state of disrepair and not exactly the view I'd care to see. Ugh. Now I've got more landscaping to do. I would love to just mulch under those trees but my dog likes to eat mulch. So I'm thinking of ground cover for part of it. My backyard looks so much bigger now.

Well, September is going to suck unless I sell some things, but I managed to pay back the $364 I stole from the Christmas account and put $200 in the 529s and $200 towards the 2016 Roth. There's seriously almost nothing else budgeted for the month except food, mortgage and utilities.

Update - snapdragon 9/1/15 ( $4852 / Goal $ 6500 )
Travel Fund - $ 4500 (currently $ 3333)
EF - $1500 (currently $ 1019)
House/car - $ 500 ( currently $ 500) !!!
Slow progress but that is fine for now. I hope to find some more money later to throw at the pots but I also have a few more line items that I will have to add next year. It's always so cheery thinking about funeral expenses. But I know I need to be ready for when my mom passes. It's just a matter of time.

Due to a complete and utter brain fart, I am not posting smilies and shoutouts this weekend, but next -- September 12 or so.
How could I have forgotten that I am going on vacation? I have been looking forward to it so much that I forgot it? How does that work, exactly?
Oh well, Savers, you now have time to get in a few more updates.

Still trying to figure out how to manage the property tax bills. The rental house taxes going up from @ $1000 to $2600, and on our home the taxes will be going up from @ $2000 to $3000. Sadly I think I'm going to have to raid money from other funds. I anticipated the increases but not that much. For 2016 I can adjust on a monthly basis, but the 2015 taxes get paid end of Nov 2015, so i gotta be getting this figured out. Keep up the good work fellow savers!

Things are moving in the right direction now. I'm still waiting for probate process to be completed, but I have done everything that is required on my end, I think. I have gotten some of the life insurance money so I have made a small step towards completing my savings goal. I almost feel like it's cheating to use insurance money to reach my goal, but we all have to accept the surprises in our lives, financial and otherwise, whether they benefit us or create additional challenges. -movinonup

Savings have been decimated by getting the house ready to sell. Instead of the $10k we have planned, we're going to be closer to $15k spent (of the $17k we had in reserve). Being down to $2k in savings is KILLING me. BUT house goes on the market on Friday. We'll hold all offers for a week, but the real estate agent fully expects us to have multiple offers after a week on the market. So I just have to be able to hold on another month or so, and we'll be able to replenish savings and then some. Assuming we sell sometime in October, we should walk away from the sale with around $85k after commission and taxes. So I just have to hold on one more month.
