I got one in 1984 that was full sized beauty rest. In 1985 it was moved to the guest room in favor of a king sized waterbed. I liked waterbeds, ISO didn't like them but 10-15 years ago I bought a double pillow top Sterns and Foster king sized I love. It is really heavy so I can't turn it without help. I might get a new one next time I move but I love my current one. When they brought it up my stairs they almost gave up so I am afraid trying to move it will mean cutting it up. I will get Sterns and Foster again, expensive but worth it. They use a heavy weight wire so much better made than cheap ones and the pillow tops are like sleeping on pillows, I like them soft.

We changed it only because we moved. Probably 10 yrs or when uncomfortable. We got a king sized one from Tuft & Needle. It's pretty awesome, inexpensive. www.tuftandneedle.com Not marked up by distributors, awesome return policy. quince - that looks very interesting - I love anything that can be delivered to my door. What does it feel like. It's firmish. I don't know how to describe it. I'm not sore in the morning after sleeping in the bed, unless I sleep in a weirdly contorted position because my son takes up more room than a 18 month old should.

I don't spend a lot on mattresses but have a 2" memory foam topper on it.... to make it comfortable.
A good nights sleep is essential..... and I wouldn't want to sleep on something with a spring sticking out or so old that its loaded with dust.

Does anybody sleep on a futon? I mean a real quality futon, not what the big box stores or Ikea call a futon.
I'm hesitating between a traditional mattress and a good quality futon. DS1 has one. I'd sleep on it but his room is in the basement and I don't like sleeping down there. At some point I'll probably bite the bullet and do it anyway.
DS2 has the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on ... I've tried to find out what it is in the US but I can't. Here it's a Pirelli Climo. Pirelli is apparently Sealy in the US but I can't find the name for the Climo. That's what I want if we get a regular mattress. But I'm hesitant, because it's pricey. I've found it online for 1140e instead of 1600e but I'm waiting to see if it goes down more in the January sales (which don't start till next week here).
Maybe I should start another thread about the futon?

Okay, I realize I'm the odd one out here (the aging, weedy-tweedy hippie) but this is where I recently bought our mattress:
shop.keetsa.com/
We got the Tea Leaf Classic. It came rolled up (!!) in a large box (with wheels) so that an ordinary homeowner can maneuver it and unwrap it themselves (aka, no delivery or installation charges). It is WONDERFUL.
I REALLY LIKE this company. They are very innovative and environmentally conscious. Their mattresses are made with organic cotton, organic wool and other environmentally friendly materials.
But in the interests of full disclosure, I have had some health/extreme chemical sensitivity and electromagnetic sensitivities in my recent history, so beds that operate with electrical current (Sleep Number, etc) are a no-starter for me. So are the tempur-pedic foam-type mattresses because they are manufactured from crude oil (the offgassing gives me a vicious headache). Keetsa uses caster bean oil to make their memory foam.
Give them a look. Good luck whatever you decide. kittensaver - thanks for posting this - I am going to check this out as well. ETA - which one did you get? The queen size Tea Leaf Classic. It's heavenly

The sales here started on Wed so I checked the price of the mattress again today (it was in my "basket" on the biggest online mattress site). It was reduced again, from 1140e to 946e (retail price 1600e in stores). That's the best price I've seen (I've been looking on and off for a year) so I ordered it. Free delivery in 6 weeks (although I'm paying 29e for them to take the old mattress.)
I found the bill from our current mattress ... Jan 2002, so our mattress is exactly 13 years old. I thought it was 15 years old. The one before it was 17 years old, so it still averages out to a new mattress every 15 years.
