Our mattress is 5 years old and survived 4 moves. About two years ago one of the metal spring came out of the mattress an my wife kept on cutting herself against it. So being the wonderful husband that I am I flipped the mattress so it is now on my side . We are currently on the market for a mattress for MIL (going from a twin bed to a queen bed) and my wife suggested it might not be a bad idea to change our mattress to. Besides that little thing the mattress seems ok to me. And I was hoping that when we did change mattress we would upgrade to one of those nice ones that are like 2k-3k, not for another $300-$500 mattress that is not comfortable. Our mattress is ok but not great. And I know spending 2k-3k on a mattress might sound crazy but with the amount of time we spend sleeping, I would like it to be on a mattress I cannot wait to get on top off and just pass out. That and good pillows... I hate when my pillows start getting soft and raggedy, I run to buy a new one. So questions is two fold: - how often do you change your mattress? - do you have one of those nice mattress? Was it worth it? Did it improve your sleep?

Based on the flat sacks of sawdust that my grandparents called mattresses, once every lifetime.

I've had my mattress for over 10 years. I think it is rather nice, but I don't even remember what it cost.

I paid $500 for my mattress in 1994 (maybe even 93). Yes, over 20 years. It is really comfortable though. I thought about getting a new one and giving this one to older son, but I hate thinking that what I get might not be as nice.

I have 10 year warranty on my mattress. It did cost about $2500. But, I think Costco has some really good deals on mattresses that we should have considered. Regardless of what you buy, make sure you get a quality waterproof mattress protectors and pillow protectors.

DF had to have a temperpedic. To the tune of 4k. He loves it. I hate it. Like sleeping on a floor. I'd go with something you both like. I just bought DS a new mattress for Christmas. $750 for a queen. One piece not even a set. But his old one lasted 13 years. And wasnt the quality.

My previous mattress I had for about 10 yrs. i love my new mattress. I think I paid about $1200. I went to Sleepy's, and they have this test mattress that you lay down on. They turn it on and it somehow measures where you put pressure. I didn't really believe it, but the 2 mattresses it chose were by far the most comfortable for me. My daughter did it too.

We bought our mattress in 2011, so I'll probably start pining for a new one in 2020. They sent the wrong one, took a week to get them to send what we bought, it arrived and it was too firm for my liking. I didn't want to deal with the $&@! store again so we bought a 3" foam topper. It's awesome. Moral of the story: make do with what you have, Spendy Spenderson. Get a foam topper and the mattress will be fine for a few more years. You can find good deals with Kohls.

Whenever I start to wake up with a back ache (that's not caused by a Cat sleeping on top of me OR from the cats causing me to sleep like a pretzel). FWIW: the new set of Used Cats are really good about NOT sleeping on top of me and not forcing me to sleep like a pretzel. I've been getting between 8 and 10 years out of the middle of the road -- sealy/serta/spring air/some other name brand -- mattresses I buy. I seem to pay between 1000 and 1500 for mattress/box spring set - usually on some sort of sale. The current mattress set is the most expensive one - It's a Spring Air and it's firm all the way to the edges. I purchased it when I had Bed Hog cats that were savvy enough to be able to push me to the edge of the bed while I slept. The firm edge meant I got a good night's sleep on the very edge of the bed - while the cats spread out across the rest of the queen sized bed. It's amazing how much space 2 cats can take up. FWIW: the new Used Cats are not Bed Hogs and don't bother me during the night. We all sleep quite nicely by sharing the bed and pillows. I tend to sleep best on a firm-ish bed. The Pillow Top beds give me a backache/general aches almost immediately. If the mattress sags I'd rather sleep on the floor. That said, I've never had one of the fancy expensive beds. I suspect once I created a 'dent' in a temperpedic I'd experience the Aches and Pains of a saggy bed. I'm vaguely interested in a Sleep Number bed - but it just seems 'complicated' - with using electricity and have switches and buttons and what not. It seems like it would cost more and still only last the 8 to 10 years I'm currently getting out of mattress. That all said. In your shoes - I'd buy a new mattress/box spring set - I'd spend a couple hours going around to the stores and 'testing' out the beds on display and looking at the 'cut aways' maybe I'd write down the name/number of the set I liked the best (or the top couple) with prices and then go home and 'sleep on' the info... I'd make one last trip to the store(s) with the ones I like best and make a decision. I'd do it this way - because all the variations/prices mattresses are overwhelming and there's no good way to compare apples to apples... I don't want to get "tired" and buy a mattress that costs more because it has a prettier covering on it (but the same insides as the less expensive one next to it at the store). I use a mattress pad and sheets so I don't really care if the mattress top is an ugly pattern or color. I rarely see it.

I am sooo ready to buy a Sleep Number or some type of adjustable mattress. What the hell, I know this is on YM but I am going to post this anyway I have a king sized Sleep Number with dual adjustable base. There is a 30 point difference between my side of the bed and my wife's. (Our old mattress matches my wife's side for firmness.) Being able to slightly elevate my head when the acid reflux comes up instead of heading to the recliner for the night is wonderful. My wife loves elevating it when I start snoring as well. I consider it money well spent.

I've had a sleep number for almost five years. My brother has had one for several years longer and my parents have probably crossed the ten year mark already.
I won't buy a new one until I upgrade to a king bed. Which I might do eventually even if single cuz I like the new features they have.

I bought a queen mattress about 2001.
upgraded to a king in 2008, DD is now using the queen mattress.
We had to replace the king mattress in about 2013 because a spring popped. It was under warranty. I plan on keeping this as long as I can.

We also coughed up the bucks and bought a Sleep Number bed several years ago. I need very firm, DH likes softer. We have the dual controls, but not the one where you can raise the head. It's been worth every penny we paid for it!

Foam mattresses are the wave of the future it seems. They certainly don't squeak as much.
I bought our mattress a little while ago - I am ready for a new one. If I had tons of money, I'd get a new one every year. Brand new mattresses (at least traditional ones) are so comfy.
Here we have a commercial that tells how much heavier a mattress is every year because we schluff skin and sweat into the mattress, and therefore you should get one every 8 years. It is an extremely effective ad because every single time I see it, I remind myself to buy a new mattress. It grosses me out.

We changed it only because we moved. Probably 10 yrs or when uncomfortable. We got a king sized one from Tuft & Needle. It's pretty awesome, inexpensive. www.tuftandneedle.com Not marked up by distributors, awesome return policy.

Okay, I realize I'm the odd one out here (the aging, weedy-tweedy hippie) but this is where I recently bought our mattress:
shop.keetsa.com/
We got the Tea Leaf Classic. It came rolled up (!!) in a large box (with wheels) so that an ordinary homeowner can maneuver it and unwrap it themselves (aka, no delivery or installation charges). It is WONDERFUL.
I REALLY LIKE this company. They are very innovative and environmentally conscious. Their mattresses are made with organic cotton, organic wool and other environmentally friendly materials.
But in the interests of full disclosure, I have had some health/extreme chemical sensitivity and electromagnetic sensitivities in my recent history, so beds that operate with electrical current (Sleep Number, etc) are a no-starter for me. So are the tempur-pedic foam-type mattresses because they are manufactured from crude oil (the offgassing gives me a vicious headache). Keetsa uses caster bean oil to make their memory foam.
Give them a look. Good luck whatever you decide.

Ours is the one I bought after my divorce in 1997. No popping springs, no backaches, so we'll stick with it. I don't remember what I paid for it; at the time I felt the whole sales thing was smoke and mirrors because you couldn't compare prices. The manufacturer assigned a different name to the same model for different retailers.
DH and I stayed in one hotel that had the Sleep Number bed; not all that impressed.

DH really wants a new mattress because he wants to upgrade from Q to K. Ours is only 5yo though, and it is still pretty comfortable (it's a Serta pillowtop). I'm going to try to hang on for at least another couple of years. We don't have a guest bed upstairs, just a futon, so whenever we upgrade we'll just move our current bed upstairs. I'd like the mattress to still have a little life left at that point, but I also don't want guests feeling too comfy kittensaver, those mattresses look nice. Are they comfortable?

OUTRAGEOUSLY comfortable. I LOVE ours.
If ordering a mattress from far away (The West Coast) is too much of a leap of faith for you, try looking for a more local or regional company that hand-crafts mattresses from quality materials. Yes you will pay a little more, but to me it has be sooooooooooo worth it. Good luck!

We replace them about every 15 years. Funny you should start this thread because we've just been talking about replacing ours.

On the other hand, I LOVE the heavenly beds the Westin hotels have. So comfy. You could do a hotel tour and test out mattresses.

We bought ours used for $400 from someone in our apartment complex 14 years ago (yeah I know but we were poor then ). It's a king and the most comfy thing ever. It's the kind that if you lay on one side and someone jumps up and down on the other side, you can't feel them jumping. It's got pretty significant indentations now , but honestly it's just crazy comfortable. Replacing it isn't on our horizon at all, especially when I see prices of quality new mattress sets.

Got a tempurpedic about three years ago and love it. They say it's good for 20 years. The only bad thing is now I have trouble sleeping on normal Mattresses, we are going to the Virgin Islands in a couple months and the tiebreaker on places to stay was the one who had tempurpedics.

I have a king sized Sleep Number. It's a hand me down from Mom, I had a queen sized one before this one. It may take a couple of nights to figure out your number but after that it's awesome! For sleeping. Anything else you may want to jack up the firmness a bit if you like the mattress on the softer side. Just sayin'.....

I'm partial to Marriott's mattresses. Pure bliss. However, those on kittensaver's website look interesting. I'm not in the market for one at this time though. I replaced my last mattress after 10 years.
