Driving around in her car, wearing body armor and shooting a gun out the window at 4 PM in the afternoon: Officers found two people who said they were at a stop sign when a woman pulled up in a dark-colored sedan and fired shots into their vehicle, hitting and disabling the radiator.
Then more calls reported a woman pointing a firearm at people as she passed them in her car, and that she fired at another vehicle in the same area. Police found Shields sitting in her vehicle in the Stuart Heights Baptist Church Parking lot on Hixson Pike, the release stated.
Shields sped away in her car and led officers on a chase down Highway 153 and Hixson Pike, still pointing her firearm at vehicles she passed.

They eventually corner her, she points a gun at the arresting officer, but she ends up being taken into custody. I have to ask - if this was a black person driving around firing a weapon out of a car, would the shooter still be alive today?

I have to ask - if this was a black person driving around firing a weapon out of a car, would the shooter still be alive today? Of course. There are hundreds of daily arrests being made with gun toting criminals being taken into custody without being killed. It all depends on what happens the moment the officer confronts the perpetrator.

Some people really go off the rails around the holidays. I'm glad no one was killed and it seemed to have ended relatively peacefully.
What rarely makes the news is the expected. If this had been a shooting in a Chicago neighborhood where no one got killed and the suspect was brought in peacefully, we would not read about it unless the suspect was really unusual like 10 year old black girl or a visiting Asian grandmother.
FWIW, I like Jma's answer better. While odds are skewed because most men are taught to not hurt women, I think nothing is guaranteed. You can be an older man tased because a cop is not getting(caring) you aren't doing anything wrong or a black guy who fired shots who goes in peacefully and no one ever reads about it except perhaps the local cops.

Instead of thinking the cops handled the situation pretty well considering the situation and that they probably would have been justified if it didn't end so peacefully...you use it as a way to discuss if this is an example of racism among police because a white person didn't get shot. Everything isn't about race...a lot of things depend on situations and people and how people interpret a situation.

You will find no condemnation of the police from me in this particular incident. My point is - the police are trained to handle these kind of nut job, volatile cases. They're trained to calm people down and work for a non violent resolution to the situation. I just wish they used that training more often, not just for crazy white women.

She was wearing body armor. Considering the lousy shooting skills, what else could they do? Sorry, if she's that crazy she will eventually harm someone else. Not pleased with result.

Her body language was non aggressive and he didn't want to be yet another officer that shoots somebody? I don't know why he was able to arrest her as he did. I would view it as a positive thing.

You actually have the right to remain silent, and frankly it's high time we developed the ability.

I reread the Free press article. It didn't have anything in there on why he didn't shoot her. It's possible to speculate all day, but I really don't do the hypothetical story thing.
