So, if I'm getting flames and smoke do I power through, or shut it down...?

I have always found that when flames appear where none were expected, it is generally a good idea to stop doing whatever I was doing that caused the flames to appear. YMMV.

Smoke in the room is wrong. The door needs to be sealed well and locked. Some small flame and smoke inside is normal.

What spilled inside? Small flames might happen if puddles of food on bottom, but big flames is trouble. This not a grill, just oven!

I sometimes get some flames in the beginning. There's not much you can do about it anyhow as I'm assuming it's all locked down. Even if you cancelled the clean cycle it would be a while before it cooled down and whatever was burning would probably burn out before then.
I agree actual smoke in the room isn't good, but mine stinks up my house at first.

Self cleaning ovens are best used when you can open a few windows. Flames? You girls are scaring me with your level of cleanliness and oven up keep. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)

Back! ... It is 40s here today, so I did open windows By the time I read you all, the flames had gone and it wasn't smoking anymore, so we powered thru. It did let out puffs of smoke initially though! That was what most concerned me. From between the oven/drawer it puffed a few times, plus releasing from top back burner. Im im glad we seem to have survived the worst of it... ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png) First world problem... Yea, I'm not generally proud of my oven cleanliness...

I've seen small flames, at times, when my oven is self-cleaning, but I knew to expect them. I knew something had spilled and not come completely up so the little flames were never a surprise. I've never seen smoke escaping, though. You might want to have the door seal checked, just to be sure.
