I ran low on creativity and funds this year, so for the two couples coming to our house for Christmas dinner this year, instead of buying something small for each person, (I know all four well enough to do this), I went with a couple gift. And, due to that lack of creativity, both couples got a throw blanket. I did get them different styles of blankets so that it wouldn't be too obvious, and I did carefully choose the color.
Couple 1 gets to the house, opens their gift. They love it, especially love the color, but note that since it's a afghan style blanket, it should not go in the living room, since their dogs' nails will catch on it.
Couple 2 arrives and opens their gift. They are both always cold and love the new blanket and the color. However, it turns out that it has fringe on it. This concerns them because one of their cats like to eat string/yarn (once age 6 FEET of yarn and had to have emergency intestinal surgery), and they are afraid he will eat this.
Couple one pulls out their blanket, checks to see it has no fringe, and offers to trade them. That way, couple one has no dog concerns about their blanket, and couple 2 has no kitty concerns about their blanket.
Trade completed. In my living room. Right in front of me.
I love my friends.

I did a planned regift kinda. Great Niece with down syndrome totally only wants what she wants 15 still believes in Santa. I wanted to get her something but no ideas. Turns out Santa didn't get her everything on her list and her mother is trying to teach her about money. So she is going to start walking dogs for $1 to earn money. Grandparents have two dogs so someone else will go to walk one while she walks the other, she isn't allowed out alone and couldn't handle two dogs. She also must count her money and how much what she wants cost and figure out what she can get, she has $130 and her mom will let her spend about $30 of that so earning the rest. She loves the Simpsons and wanted season 17. So I gave her brother $100 Amazon gift card to share with her, he will buy the Simpsons and keep the rest so she gets a real gift doesn't need to shop online or get mother's approval or budget her dog walking money for that. She still wants many other things like Spirit wear but that would be too hard for me to get her.

OP, that sounds like something my kids would have done. They'd get their loot and then shamelessly start trading.

@southernsusana - my name and my brother's name are one letter different from each other (and it's the last letter). Sometimes, we'd open a gift meant for the other one on pure accident. Our parents would see the gift and then try to make us give it to the person it was meant for. Sometimes that was no big deal, sometimes we wanted to hold the gifts hostage...

OP, that sounds like something my kids would have done. They'd get their loot and then shamelessly start trading. So have mine. However, I will admit that this was my own fault: they like the same kind of things and I would get their wish lists mixed up. Especially with books, really who can keep track of who wants which philosophy/economic/marketing/travel book if they love the same subjects. This year I rocked though -> I wrapped by person, no mix and match, and no trading. Score!
