I had them in NY. Kind of an upside down chocolate cupcake with Chocolate chips and some sort of Cream filling. To die for!!! No one in this area has heard of them!

Are you sure it's not Chocolate Chiffons?

Yes. For sure. They had a sign up. There were two kinds. Chocolate and coffee. Not a chiffon consistency.

Not around here, no. I tried Googling the term, with and without quotes, and got nothing. I did see references to chocolate chiffons (as opposed to chocolate-flavored chiffon cake) and the references are on mostly Asian-based pastry and baking websites. Surprisingly, although chiffon sounds French, the cake was invented by a California baker.

What is Saffron? A spice? What does it taste like and what do you use in?

Saffron (pronounced /ˈsæfrən/ or /ˈsæfrɒn/)[1] is a spice derived from the flower of Crocus sativus, commonly known as the saffron crocus. Crocus is a genus in the family Iridaceae. Saffron crocus grows to 20–30 cm (8–12 in) and bears up to four flowers, each with three vivid crimson stigmas, which are the distal end of a carpel.[2] Together with the styles, or stalks that connect the stigmas to their host plant, the dried stigmas are used mainly in various cuisines as a seasoning and colouring agent
Saffron's taste and iodoform- or hay-like fragrance result from the chemicals picrocrocin and safranal.[13][14] It also contains a carotenoid pigment, crocin, which imparts a rich golden-yellow hue to dishes and textiles

@ Wisconsin Beth - I think I'll try to make something similar after the Christmas rush. Have to find different measurements, though. I don't know a gram from a centimeter!!! I'll keep looking!

@ezzie here is a recipe for "plain" saffron cupcakes. Maybe NancysSummerSip can help you figure out how to add chocolate and a filling? I'm pretty much a box mix cupcake/cake girl... But if you were around here, I'd happily tastetest for you.

Thanks, @ Jaguar. I'll print them out. Bad timing with New Year's Resolutions and all . but I'll have them for reference when the resolutions go by the wayside.
