At least part of the money people spent on daycare could be redirected into a college fund. It may not cover all the costs for the child to attend college but every little bit helps IMO. This, of course, is if your IRA is also already being funded.

Except we're not saving as much as we should be for retirement and other investments while we pay $3k/month in daycare...
Also, to think that college costs will not rise in the 16 years before its time to send a kid to college is silly.

LOL, only if you work part time & have all day preschool. DS2 misses the kindergarten cutoff by a month, so he will be almost 6 before he starts school full-time - and that only works because my district has free all-day kindergarten, many don't. And even then I will be paying $83/week just for after school care (add in before school & it goes up more). Which is nothing compared to the $261 I pay a week now, but still not free.

I actually agree with this. I cash flow $2400/month to daycare and stash $800/month in 529's.

Ok! So back to the average of ~16k/year per child. And college costs in 18-20 years? I ether stick my head in the sand for now and think happy thoughts

Ok so you will still need before care and aftercare. Isn't that way cheaper than daycare?

Well, first of all, they'll most likely be at least 5 before not needing full time daycare, but not only do you need before and after school care, you also need care for all the days they don't have school...including the summer. You're stuck with childcare expenses to around age 12. Plus all the school expenses. My daycare included food, but school doesn't. Lunch, Snack fees, field trips, and all the assorted school expenses add up.

One of DS' buddies is coming to our house over Christmas break for a few days because one day of childcare is $40. She's 6! That is another thing... Don't all groups have "that" house were all the kids go to on snow days / summer break / after school because there is a stay at home parent there? Or because a parent was there already (stay home from work or come home early from work or when schools gets out?)? When I was growing up there was always "that" house. It was either a stay at home parent or someone that only worked during school hours.

When you find someone who is willing to watch my kid 8 hours a day for three months for free please send me that person's number.
Christmas break is a combo of me, my mother and MIL this year. If we didn't have them it'd be $210.60 for a week and a half of full time daycare.

We are cash flowing around 2K + expenses for college every month and still maxing retirement and paying our bills. It makes me sick to think where this money was going before we started last year, since it was not like we were saving the amount that we are paying for college.

But, I guess your house could be the free daycare house in your neighborhood. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

I have two aunts that did it and still soon it now... Their house was "that" house with 5-15 kids there at all times. They liked it because they always knew were their kids were (home) and even encouraged it by : - always having snacks - always feeding the kids - always offering to watch the kids I dunno, I guess I assumed it was normal.

They should only cost a few dollars for the download in 18 years right? ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

No it's not, that's an exception to the rule. The majority of people need to pay someone to watch their kids during breaks. You could also get busted for running an unlicensed daycare if you got 15 neighborhood kids you're watching consistently in your house.
