"Why We Shout In Anger"
A Hindu saint who was visiting river Ganges to take bath found a group of family members on the banks, shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his disciples smiled'n asked.
'Why do people shout in anger shout at each other?'
Disciples thought for a while, one of them said,'Because we lose our calm, we shout.'
'But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner.'asked the saint
Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the other disciples. Finally the saint explained, .
'When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other to cover that great distance.
What happens when two people fall in love? They don't shout at each other but talk softly, Because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is either nonexistent or very small...'
The saint continued,'When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak, only whisper'n they get even closer to each other in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other'n that's all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.'
He looked at his disciples and said.
'So when you argue do not let your hearts get distant, Do not say words that distance each other more, Or else there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find the path to return.'

I deal with shouting people all the time. I think part of the reason people shout is because they don't feel they are being heard - that nobody is listening to them. I think it's actually a symptom of feeling powerless.
In addition, I see people shout because they try to intimidate - by being louder and, therefore, bigger. I think there is more than one reason people shout but I sure did like the reasons contained in your OP. It makes a lot of sense in some cases.

... a symptom of feeling powerless. ... people shout because they try to intimidate ... "When you wake up in the morning, Pooh," said Piglet at last, "what's the first thing you say to yourself?" "What's for breakfast? said Pooh. "What do you say, Piglet?" "I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?" said Piglet. Pooh nodded thoughtfully."It's the same thing," he said. en.m.wikiquote.org/wiki/The_Tao_of_Pooh

Volume is also cultural in some ways. Hardly a month goes by when I don't admonish my husband to stop yelling at his mother although I've been there enough, and know enough now to realize that they probably aren't really angry (although they are loud then too).

Back when I was teaching special education students, I was in a meeting with a parent. The principal walked in and asked why we were yelling. We stopped, looked at each other, and then started laughing. I knew her, and she knew herself, well enough to understand, "If you ain't yellin', you ain't lovin'".

Couples yell at each other because we've heard it all before and tune it out so if you yell it again even louder the other may actually listen. This time.

I don't yell. I speak in a firm, authoritative tone of voice that can be heard above everything else around me.

I yelled at my neighbor on the other side of his rotting and disintegrating six-foot tall privacy fence yesterday after his pitbull and lab retriever broke through the fence for the 4th time in 6 months and tried to attack and kill the cats in my backyard. The cats escaped but one was slightly injured. Called the police and reported it today so there is a record of a police report. I am then going to send him the vet bill. And if he refused to pay it, I am taking him to small claims court.
I have spoken to him at his home before about his rotting fence and he refuses to do anything about it. So I yelled at him yesterday out of anger and continued frustration.

Because my kids don't listen unless we yell at them.

They were probably arguing over whose turn it wasn't to bathe in the Ganges.

How else will the trash get taken out? Explain "trash" please. And aren't folks supposed to be respectful of others' religions, beliefs and practices on the religion board? Between your and Virgil's quote comment, neither of you are very respectful.

That's the #1 complaint of most wives that men have to be told to take out the trash. That and not enough sumpin' sumpin'.

We have no business throwing stones even if we don't wade in them (which we often do anyway).

Possibly Peace Of Mind means she did not reply the former post only she said you gotta yell at hubby else he will not take the trash to the street.

- I disapprove of all kinds of religious practices. Polygamy, infanticide, snake handling, idol worship, bathing in extraordinarily toxic rivers, ...
