No.
Many years ago, I could drink diet cola all day long. Then I realized I was drinking nothing but chemicals.

I'll admit, I'm a somewhat heavy soda drinker. I do drink diet almost exclusively though, so I only have to contend with the sugar, not the calories.
It's hard to say exactly how much I drink.
I would say 3-6 a day is probably average. I'll usually have one in the morning, one for lunch, one in the afternoon, and maybe one at night, and maybe one somewhere else in the day.
I admittedly could probably stand to lose about 15 pounds or so, but I wouldn't say I have significant weight problems. Though I don't think the soda habit is entirely to blame for it. I think I also consume too many carb heavy foods and don't exercise. But that's counterbalanced because I don't really eat that much in the grand scheme of things, and I don't snack. I am pretty successful at avoiding high fat foods like fries, pizza, hamburgers. Also, I don't drink, beer has a lot of calories.
I have considered recently cutting down my soda intake and limiting myself to just 3 a day. The truth is though, I don't really like tap water. I'm trying to find a good substitute, maybe iced tea or orange juice.

Could I do this? Probably not. But I do believe that the claimed outcome happened. One of my sisters dropped about 40 pounds in about six months. Claimed the only things she did was quit drinking soda. And she always drank the sugared version. The math has her decreasing her caloric intake by ~700 calories/day. 700 calories is 5 cans of coke/day. if you consider that many fast food sodas are 21 oz vs a 12 oz. can, just going for fast food and refilling a soda once gives you nearly 4 cans worth. Good point. And, yes. Sis's consumption was probably in the 5, 6, 7 can a day range. To extend your math a little further, I believe that a pound of body weight represents about 3,000 calories. So Prior's Coke consumption would have added about 14 pounds (one stone) to his body weight over 30 days. Where Mr. Prior picked up the other stone, I don't know.

Not sure where I originally read it, but here's a link that says excess carbs are stored with extra water.
Here's a URL that has something similar to what I read elsewhere. Carbohydrate Storage Some excess calories you consume from carbohydrates are converted to and stored as glycogen, a complex carbohydrate, in your body. Your body stores glycogen primarily in your muscle and liver cells. Every 1 gram of carbohydrate gets stored along with 3 grams of water. According to Iowa State University, a healthy adult body can store about 500 grams of carbohydrate.

I used to drink 6-12 cans of soda each day, every day, for years. I switched to diet in 2008. I finally quit cold turkey on August 12, 2013. It was unbelievably difficult. I would dream about it! It was much harder for me to quit soda than it was to quit smoking.
While I haven't really seen a change in my weight, I can tell a huge difference in the way I feel. Even though diet is "sugar free" it still messes with your system. I have PCOS, which causes insulin resistance, and I've found that my blood sugar levels are much more stable since I quit.

So this guy was eating a paleo diet everyday and looks like he exercises frequently. The article says nothing about whether his fitness routine changed on those 60 days, but I suspect he did to achieve the results he did. A few years ago, I signed up for a marathon training team and trained for 6 months. Going from running very little to 30-50 miles a week made some significant changes to my physical fitness. By the time the marathon was over, I had a few injuries I couldn't ignore anymore and gave up running cold turkey to heal. I put on 10 pounds the first month and another 10 pounds the second month. My body just wasn't use to going from extreme fitness to sedentary. I had lost a total of 10 pounds from marathon training, so I worse off than if I had never trained at all. My body calibrated again to my comfortable weight, but it took awhile.

I drank a lot more soda before I got sick, it was nothing for me to drink 1-2 cans/day. While I was sick and on antibiotics, the only soda that even tasted worth drinking was ginger ale, the rest seemed horribly acidic to me and all acidic things tasted like vinegar. All spicy food got spicier to the point where it was not enjoyable. So I was off soda, alcohol (yep, wine and beer both tasted horrible to me) and anything spicy. I drink soda now, but if I have 1-2/week, that's a lot.

The article says nothing about whether his fitness routine changed on those 60 days, but I suspect he did to achieve the results he did. I would expect that going from a relatively healthy diet to drinking that much crap per day would make you feel really ill & probably not feeling up to exercising or doing anything. It is seriously just making me sick just thinking about it.
