Why selfies? What's up with people posting on Facebook pictures they took of themselves? What are your thoughts on selfies?
Do you ever comment when your Facebook friends post selfies? I don't.

I think they are so that people can competitively show off how little they paid for their new hair dye.

I take them. Mostly because I'm off doing my own thing often and it's easier to just take one myself then find and ask someone who invariably has no idea how my phone/camera works.

I have dozens of pictures from the 90's - before digital - that were "selfies." It used to be a real skill, when you couldn't see the picture you were taking, and you had to wait until you get the film developed to see if you got it. My husband and I pretty much only have selfies from our honeymoon. I am so ahead of my time!

One of the funnest parts of DD going to Elena Delle Donnes basketball camp was that she got to take a selfie with her!

I always thought selfies were a way to prove something - a kind of "Look! I'm picking out a Christmas tree!", "Look! I'm having fun with my friends at a tailgate", "Look! I'm playing the lastest game before anyone else", or to prove they look cool.... I think selfies are interesting because photos/pictures ALWAYS are biased or 'staged' in some way and meant to convey something to the viewer. They are interesting look into someone else's head (the taker of the photo AND/OR the subjects of the photo). The camera may be unbiased - the phototaker is not.

"Selfies" have been around for years. They used to be called "taking a picture of yourself."

The "Nobody really cares about you, so stop showing off" attitude. Heaven forbid I care about my friends and are interested in their life at all. Lord knows that would never happen. And the only reason anyone, ever, would have to take a picture is sheer narcissism and to beg for attention.

As a grandparent, I like selfies posted on FB so I can see the family and what they are doing. It's a great conversation without spoken words.

To me there is a difference in posting pictures of what is going on as to posting numerous pictures of just a person's face over and over. Maybe I have a fine line drawn between selfie and general pictures on FB. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/tongue2.png)

I think they are narcissistic and lame. But, that's just me.
And, I think the older the subject of the photo, and the amount of their clothing on their body, help to move some in the OMG column.

I think the advent of smartphones have something to do with it. A lot of people just don't use normal cameras anymore, they exclusively use their phone.
But, I'm not sure how hard it would be to hunt someone down to snap a quick picture of you...
I don't know, maybe it is one of those things that was cute at first and caught on.

Selfies let you control the quality of the picture of yourself. You learn what angles look good and what doesn't. Well you can if you pay attention. I don't take many of myself because I don't like pictures of me taken that close. I like seeing people's pictures from selfies to vacation pics, bring it on. Just let me control when and for how long I look at them.

The only problem I have with "selfies" is the word. Dumbest word ever. Self portraits have been around since people learned to paint.
It kind of makes sense that people would use a site called "facebook" to post pictures of their faces. It's almost as if people don't read status updates unless they come with a pic- like instagram. So, you post that you're outside at the playground, or baking cookies, or whatever- and of course, you need a pic to prove it.

My niece takes selfies of herself with her two little kids (4 & 6) when they're playing or having fun, just goofing around. They're cute to look at and see them all having a great time together. My brother did selfies with him and his g/f when they did a cross country tour of Canada/US - by different landmarks, and locations. Interesting photos and they didn't have to ask some passer-by to take a pic of them.
Another friend does constant numerous close-up selfies of just herself - head/face shots. Any time she snaps a pic, (which is often) it instantly gets uploaded to her wall - or her profile pic - which also changes on a daily basis. Seems kind of narcissistic when a person does it to that extreme.

I hate the word Selfie. My phone has a "Selfie" setting which just turns on the front facing camera. People have been taking pictures of themselves since cameras became common use items. I don't mind it... I just hate that suddenly they are called "Selfies"

I don't take selfies, but then I hate having my picture taken. I don't really care if anyone else does it though, but I'm tired of the stupid duck face selfies. That's really not a good look on anyone.
