NOTHING was open on Thanksgiving. No fast food places. Grocery stores had a short day-open until about 2 pm. WAG & CVS were NOT on every other corner & the only drug store open in my area was the 24/7 privately owned one.
It was 1979 & the first year my cousin hosted Thanksgiving. However, she had a family emergency and asked me & mine to come early to help cook so she could handle the emergency. EVERTHING we passed driving there (about 15 miles on surface streets) was closed.

I won't shop on Thursday and I haven't shopped Black Friday for more than twenty years. There's NOTHING I need THAT bad. Tomorrow DF and I will go to Sarasota and Longboat Key. Yum, dinner at Columbia!

NNP...my county still has no retail shopping on Sunday, and I love it. It's the only day there's no crazy traffic.

For as long as I can remember, grocery stores were open at least until noon, gas stations were open, hospitals, fire stations, police stations, food kitchens, rest stops, movie theaters, bowling alleys, public transportation, football players, reporters, news, entertainers, airports, Chinese restaurants, a few diners and a short list of other stuff were open. I don't remember a time when "NOTHING" was opened. I've never been able to shop black Fridays deals because I worked and I'm guessing there are a lot of people in the same boat. It works for every other holiday, after all.

I remember when the local stores weren't open for business until after church was done on a Sunday. For holiday travel, you had to search to find a gas station open, which wasn't easy since Dad's car only got about 7 miles to the gallon.
I have no plans to go shopping today or tomorrow, unless I find something unbelievable online. Today is about being thankful, & time with family & friends.

I remember when stores in my state couldn't sell alcohol on Sunday.
Oh wait...that was only five days ago.

Don't know where you are, but that sounds like the "blue laws" I remember being repealed here and that is when everything started opening on Sundays. Most places didn't open till around 12 or 1 but that fell by the wayside long ago.

One of the things we miss about living in the part of Germany that we did (Bonn NRW) is Quiet Sunday. Only bakeries, florists, gas stations and restaurants are open and no machinery like electric lawnmowers can be run. That was really nice.

But we can only sing after 12 noon on Sundays here ETA: Unless you know the places in south part of the county that will sell on the sly before noon!!

I'm watching the thanksgiving day parade right now and all those people aren't home laying low inside with their families.

I'm guessing there's not a jewish population in your county....I don't understand why there are communities that think the entire united states has sunday as the sabbath. When I left NNJ in 2003, Paramus (a city with a couple of major highways lined with multiple shopping malls and strip shopping centers) did not allow retail shopping on Sundays. Retail traffic included people coming in from nearby NYC, because NJ had no sales tax on clothing. The Paramus residents liked the Sunday closings but there were significant numbers of Jews in the area, including those who strictly observed Sabbath, and they would have liked to be able to shop on Sunday. According to Wikipedia, they still prohibit retail shopping on Sundays. What I remember is the official start of the Christmas shopping season being the day after Thanksgiving. My mother remembers that banks distributed Christmas Club account balances earlier than that, though, and stores wanted to grab for that money as early as possible. Christmas Club accounts have all but disappeared, of course, now that you can get a credit card if you're breathing. It was a type of installment savings, with the bank adding some interest at the end. DH weighed our paper today. It was over 3 lbs. The actual stuff you could read was 8 ounces. I guess I should be happy that people are buying all that stuff because it's really good for my investments. And, even though I haven't bought my granddaughter a little pink battery-operated Jeep to drive up and down the driveway, I just started a 529 account for her with $6,000, so she'll benefit, too.

We were talking last night about a truck accessory he wanted and he said he would shop for it today. I told him nothing is open on Thanksgiving so we ordered on Amazon. Then I see Sears is open today but told him we don't shop on Thanksgiving because people should be home with families, he agrees.
Gas stations, convenience stores and emergency things should be open and restaurants for travelers or singles who don't cook. Nice if groceries are open until before 1 so you can get sour cream or something but I won't be doing a week of shopping it should all be express lane.

Wow, they repealed our laws back in the early 70's. Had no idea other places still had blue laws. Learn something new every day Oh and I remember the Christmas Club checks and shopping day after Thanksgiving and traffic backing up near the malls. I did it when my son was little. One year was on second floor of department store waiting to check out and the floor actually shook. That was my last year in the "mob scene" But they didn't call it black friday then.

Most things are closed here on a Sunday. Weird thing is the hardware stores, since apparently no one else ever wants to purchase things like PVC pipe on a Sunday here... Why fix your plumbing when you can go to work on Monday without showering?

I saw a quip on the news that one in four Americans will work Thanksgiving or Christmas this year, and 47% of workers work nights, weekends, or holidays. I guess the 9-5 M-F schedule is dying off.

That's right where I live, right smack in the middle of those malls! Today was the first time they opened on Thanksgiving evening. The plaza and Paramus Park opened at 6 PM, but the Bergen Mall (now Bergen Town Center) did not open. I hope no one shops so they don't open next Thanksgiving.

I can remember (yes I'm an antique), when groceries weren't open past 6 pm. And weren't open at all on Sundays - ever.
When a few malls started sprouting up, they were open til 6 pm - and 9 pm on Fri/Sat - open from noon til 5 on Sunday - once they finally did start opening 7 days a week.
Now it's a 24/7 world. The mega-malls here open anywhere between 9 and 10 (or earlier) and stay open til 11 or 12 at night - 7 days a week - except XMas and NYD. (Some on Easter).
American "Black Friday" has now invaded Canada. Many stores here are having Black Friday blowout sales. Boxing Day (now Boxing Week) sales here start early on Dec 26th and go straight through the week til Jan 1 (NYD). A big time to buy furniture, electronics, clothing, etc. What people fail to realize about "Black Friday" type sales, is that retailers usually raise their prices just after Halloween, to make you think you're getting a great deal on that 20% or more saving during the big sale on Black Friday.
"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World" as the movie title states.

I remember when most things were closed on Sunday, but that's changed now for sure. You still can't buy liquor or a car in my state on Sundays though.

Car dealerships can't be open in WI or IA either. Not sure about the Dakotas. I like it. Sunday is the only day you can peruse the lots without being hassled by sales people.

We're pretty capitalistic here, you can pretty much buy anything, anytime. I know some very small local communities have ordinances making themselves a dry town due to massive alcohol problems with their residents, but that's not the norm.

Heck, I can remember WHEN nothing was open on Sundays except resturants and drug stores. Retail openings was unheard of!! But this was way back in the neanderthal stage of civilization I remember those days from my school age years. i think it had changed somewhat by the time I was in upper high school & for sure by college age.
It is only in the past 20 years that grocery stores sell meat on Sun. Booze sales are a town by town thing. One nearby town had sales whenever the store was open. Another town totaly prohibit Sun sales. My town was after 12 noon on Sun but that too has changed to earlier.
In IL you cannot buy a car on Sun-been the law about 20 years. Dealerships are prohibited from being open. Personally I find that DUMB.

This is really interesting learning about how things are in different cities/regions/states. Except for liguor sales in stores before noon on Sundays we are wide open when it comes to openings on Sunday. But that also is a county by county thing.

I can't think of anything in my area (DC metro) that is closed on Sunday except Chick fil a and Hobby Lobby.
