swampAre you getting snow too? I know you're in upstate NY but I'm extremely hazy on the geography of the state of NY. Are you ok? I'm not near buffalo. I'm near Watertown. Watertown is getting hit but not like buffalo. I'm north of it. Cold but only about 4 inches of snow. Beerwench is in a snow drift. |

OK, yes, yes, I know I am taking this OT - but does anyone know of any good recipes that are "from England" I am doing "country of the month" with the kids and we are doing England. Last month was Japan and it was so nice and easy - sushi and dumplings all way. this month I am lost  ETA: I really wish Beerwench would return |

Beef Wellington. Hard to make but here you can buy layered pastry dough to wrap meat and it is good. I think best for kids is prime rib, yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and peas. Find a British restaurant to have experience!   I think of something much better! Chip Butty. French fries sandwich in buttered bread.  I think more! Welsh Rarebit. Cheese Sauce on toasts. ![]()  I got it. I am so proud of myself for this day. |

Swamp I've seen that before but I think it's pretty accurate (DH is a Brit). Lena, what a fun idea! These are some typical UK sandwiches: - cucumber (more for teatime / snack than lunch) - tuna with corn - BLT (not sure if you eat bacon) As Taliare suggested: scones are easy and fun, DH makes them often Fish and chips or shrimp scampi and chips. Both are typically eaten with (mushy) peas English roast: roast chicken / beef / pork with mashed potatoes and one or two green vegetable(s). Add Yorkshire Pudding if you're feeling ambitious ... it's delicious! It's a kind of bread you eat with the roast so you don't eat too much meat. It is originally from the poorer, mining regions of England where people needed it to "fill up" because meat was too expensive to eat much of it. English breakfast: fried eggs, bacon and / or sausages, with fried tomatoes, mushrooms, toast and baked beans. (It's not that different from an American breakfast except for the baked beans.) I won't go near some typical UK dishes like steak and kidney pudding or haggis because I don't eat kishkes/organ meats. Indian food is VERY common in the UK so you could do an Indian curry unless you're planning to do India one month Jamie Oliver is a famous British chef who does a lot of easy / kid-friendly meals. We just made his marinated salmon last week, it was delicious! You can find a ton of his recipes online. |

I don't know what that means....and I don't think I want to know No worries. In New England baked beans are not an unusual side for breakfast. Healthier than home fries too.
I've lived in NE now for 7 yrs, I LOVE baked beans, but for breakfast? Hmm...i guess it's no worse than left over pizza  |

Bangers and Mash or Toad in the Hole? I'm not British (not even close) but I picked up a couple of packages of Bangers at the local Highland Games - and I made a Bangers and Mash (I went fancy and used beer and sweet onions for the gravy) from a UK recipe (I had to convert the measurements and oven temp). I hear you can make Toad in the Hole with any kind of breakfast sausage.

Baked beans isn't part of an English breakfast.
You would have, Fruit juice.... bacon, sausage, fried egg, tomato...then optional hash browns, black pudding or mushrooms......toast and marmalade....and tea/coffee
You might put baked beans on a fry-up...which you may eat any time of the day.
Actually nobody seriously eats that lot every day.......unless you want a heat attack.
Its more likely to be a bowl of cereal or porridge.
As for those sayings. Its all part of understatement. |
