Helping son make Burmese curry tonight and while cleaning shrimp remembered that my father, who has moved south, told me that down there they don't devein shrimp... Can that be true? So, devein or not? Also, I cleaned the chilies and wiped under my nose/ above my lip before washing my hands... Urghaa... Maybe I shouldn't be teaching cooking. I buy shrimp that are already peeled and deveined so heck yeah devein....who wants to eat shrimp poop? Just for the record only the little vein on the underside that has the legs next to it is the shrimp poop kind. That isn't the ones that bothers most people enough to deveen them though, and the ones bought in the store as deveined never have that one taken out that I have seen. The vein that runs down the back is actually the spinal cord, or at least what passes for a spinal cord in shrimp, if that makes anyone feel better.

I devein if the shrimp are large and I am frying them. Otherwise I do not worry.
I grew up in Miami and we would go shrimping in the winter. On a good night we would catch up to 100 lbs of shrimp. Usually only 1 or 2 good nights a year though.
