we have been having a certain kind of dialog about Islam for a long time.
it is time to have another one.
is it the combination of horrific circumstances and religion that breeds radicalism, or the other way around?

I always enjoy Reza Aslan. He's well educated in this subject and rational in his thought. This is an important subject and one that really should be discussed, IMO.

i think Aslan's attitude is really good. my general sense of things is that bigotry is totally unhelpful. but what he is saying here is basically that the fact that we are so COMFORTABLE with our bigotry these days means that it can be confronted, because it gets discussed.
that is a very interesting position. but i kinda agree with it.

So do I, dj. I believe it most assuredly can, and should be confronted. It's too easy to deny bigotry with a twist of words to make it seem to be something else. There's a lot of it around and if we don't say anything, how do we expect to counteract it?

Interesting, isn't it? I've found, through my life, each time I was confronted with a problem there was, within that problem, both a solution and an opportunity.

there was a great question that Reza could have asked of that FOX News knucklehead who asked why a Muslim would be writing about Christianity.
he could have asked if she was a Christian. she would have said yes. he then could have asked why she was interviewing a Muslim on her show.

*chuckle* Yeah, he could have. I thought he handled that one pretty well, though. Mr. Aslan probably knows more about Christianity than said knucklehead will ever learn in his lifetime!

I really need to read his book, The Zealot. It's on mother's Kindle but I haven't gotten around to reading it. It's caused quite a stir, apparently.

If you downloaded it under your account I believe you can download it again to your own device.

Oh, I could read it on mother's, Tenn. She doesn't use it anymore and I always got all her books for her. She just can't keep up with it now. I just haven't taken the time to read the book.

really? that's it. day-um. i wish i could post this at the main board. I don't see why this thread could not be moved to the main board. Although our moderators are all volunteers, and they cannot sit 24/7 on these boards, let alone one particular thread, careful review and moderation of this thread and subject could result in a meaningful discussion. In the video, there is no mention whose God is the real God. Nor are there any passages from the Bible or Koran and individual interpretation of same. Having said that, and while I have not seen this particular video until now, I did watch the CNN interview when it was on several months ago. Reza Aslan speaks about the end of colonialism in the Middle East some 50-60 years ago and the upheavals in many parts of the region. This same turmoil occurred at the end of colonialism in Africa in the 1960s too. In Africa, it was and still is driven by tribal alliances and beliefs, not that much different that what is occurring in the Middle East. It will simply take time for these folks to work it out amongst themselves. If there are flare ups that require the attention and intervention of the world to resolve, we will have to addresses them case-by-case.

REALLY?
