Illinois 'Romeo And Juliet' Law Would Take Young Sex Offenders Off Registry Shane Sandborg has gone from convict, to loving husband and father, to test case. At age 17, the East Moline man fell in love with a young woman named Kristina, who was fourteen months younger than he. They had a consensual sexual relationship, Shane asked the woman to marry him, and she became pregnant. But when police came around investigating a burglary and found out about their relationship, they charged Shane with criminal sexual abuse. www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/02/illinois-romeo-and-juliet_n_830301.html

Yes, this should be dealt with... I'm actually surprised at the OP case... in some states i know its a 2 year difference in ages... or so i thought? I'm sure it varies somewhat... Regardless, i agree this type of thing should not be registered as a sex crime like rape and sexual asult and child molestation...

I'm so glad to hear this. Some of these kids just don't deserve to be on that list to begin with.

Makes good sense. Two-four year difference is one thing. 10-20 age year difference is quite another.

A couple of years ago, I had some work done to repair the outside of my chimney. The man I contracted to do the work told me, right up front, that he was a sex offender. I asked the particulars. He said that about 12 years previously he had consensual sex with his then girlfriend, who was 17 at the time, and later became his first wife. He was 19 at the time. I don't recall all the details, but he had a couple of counts against him, paid a fine, and served some time, in addition to being classified as a sex offender. Being how direct he was, and that he appeared to need to tell his story, he's been carrying a great burden all these years.

I agree with the premise but what the hell is going on here? There are just not enough details in the original story. How could the police charge him with the crime without an accusation, why would they bother? Sounds like they wanted him for something else but couldn't pin it so they went for a different angle.

It's just stupid that these cases even go as far as they do. I've read countless stories of lives being ruined by this type of thing. Good law, imo

Mr. Burns - Maybe because she was pregnant? Hard for an underage girl let alone pretty much any woman to hide the pregnancy from others.

Have you ever heard of the concept of denial? I doubt they would take a DNA test after the birth just to bust the guy. It is possible though that these individuals are just not all that bright.

Or if the parents were upset after finding out their daughter was having sex. Most parents probably would be upset, I'm hoping most wouldn't file charges if it was consensual and they were this close in age.

They most certainly would do a DNA test. They do DNA tests all the time to prove paternity & in the case of an underage girl, they would definitely do the test not just for paternity, but to determine if it occurred in an inappropriate relationship. I'm glad they are working on this. I have a friend who is on the list for a similar reason.

Not a lot of the ones here, judging by the discussions I had on the public school and abortion threads...
