Looks like the change in servicer threw a monkey wrench in my closing today because, NOW, we have to wait for a payoff quote from Freedom Mortgage. In an ironic twist, it was March 31st, 2020 that the sale on my Delaware house closed. And it was two years before that, in March/April, that I had refi'd to Freedom from Chase. I guess I have a thing for Spring.

this week has been expensive. the good news is that the ESPP withholdings stop either this paycheck (Fri, in Apr) or next, so that's more cash in hand to pay for things outright. I'm not sure how long it will take for the stock purchase/payout process to unfold, either. I'll update on time with whatever increase I have at that date, and update again after the windfall lands and I pay stuff off with it. I've been pricing - and starting to implement - some planned spring projects for this house, and today was a trip to the vet for x-rays for the golden retriever. I have a sinking feeling she's going to have matching bionic knees by summer. today's visit was a hair over $400, with the promise of follow-up visits once they figure out what the path forward is.

UPDATE ByeDebtBye: 03/31/21 $2,304.30 (09/28/18, $33,407.11, WIRR180)
Down $1,345.13 from my last update a couple of weeks ago. I'm so close! By the end of April I will be debt free. I have $3k sitting in my savings account and could be debt free now, but I'm scared an emergency will come up and will need those funds (hey Murphy, I see you!). Since my remaining debt is all at 0% interest, I'm going to patiently wait for my next two paychecks to finish paying off this debt.

I'm so excited to find y'all again! I participated in this group back when I was pregnant with my son in 2009. The debt I paid down then enabled me to be a stay at home mom and I'm so thankful for the support I found with this group. Since then I have had my second child and I went back to work once she was in school. We spent 3 years wasting the extra income my job brought in until Covid hit and I realized how stupid we had been to waste the opportunity to get rid of our debt. Since August of 2020 we have paid down $23,492 in consumer debt and saved a $5000 emergency fund. We have $36,195 left to pay off.
I have to say it is really cool to see familiar names in here that have made so much progress in eliminating their debt and are working on their mortgages.
I couldn't remember the name of this group and the search terms I was using to try and find it were *really* long and convoluted, but I found it!! Lol. I kept wanting to say it was something like The Red Hat Ladies, but I knew that wasn't right and I couldn't pinpoint why that kept sticking in my brain.
Kimmykins: 4/1/21 $36,195 (4/1/21, $36,195, WIRR 264)

posting a little early. no more payments are going out before the 9th anyway. I'm continuing to pay down the promotional rates, although that one on the top line reset this month. I got notification from my employer that the ESPP period is complete, and that another confirmation will be coming out once the ESPP purchase information lands in my account - in a few weeks. ugh...I'm glad I decided not to re-up that enrollment for now. so whenever that clears, that top line will go. I've got a $1k snowball earmarked for that card with my next paycheck, since the ESPP is over now. I sent out a large payment this morning to American Express, the balance there is what's left. I'm going to be adding to it in the coming weeks as I navigate the golden's orthopedic issues and the various house projects. I OK'd an estimate for a bunch of tree work this am, ~$2500. so there's going to be some up and down as I use the card to keep track of expenses. creditor | start | previous | today | Citi #2 | $4,394.29 | $4710.72 | $4909.88 | Discover #1 | $16,553.65 | $18,080.41 | $17,779.06 | Discover #2 | $14,278.26 | $5,630.84 | $5,502.24 | 1st National | $24,168.63 | $19,752.47

A fun 2020 tax story. Shortly after I moved to IN, I went on the MyPay site to change my State w/h. I had set it up to pay Iowa an extra $10 while I was there--because my statements were showing that nothing was coming out for them for December so, at the beginning of January when I expected to be there longer, I allocated the extra $--and since I was no longer there, I needed to cancel that. So, I went on the site and took care of it. Now, I don't trust the MyPay site in this category because there's nothing online that shows my actual w/h status...nothing that shows "Single, 0" or "Single, 1" so I called DFAS to ensure it was all set up correctly. The rep assured me it was. Well, I got my 1099R for 2020 and what does it show? That I live in Iowa and that I paid them $10 for 2020. That's it. That's the total amount of State taxes taken out for the year 2020 for ANY/ALL states in which I lived. It puzzled me, to say the least. I pressed on. I entered all my stuff into Turbo Tax to get an idea of what the tax liability would be--mind you, IN has great tax benefits for military retirees--but it didn't seem right so I opted to go ahead and take my stuff to the local H&R Block last weekend. I'm really glad I did. She confirmed that $10 was the total amount that I had paid to ANY/ALL states last year and that I would owe. And my distrust against MyPay was totally founded. It had me living in IA for ALL of 2020 which meant I wouldn't be able to take advantage of IN tax benes. I needed to call Military Retiree Pay and get things settled. If I wasn't able to fix it, I may end up owing $1100+ to IA. If I was able to, it could be down to $380. Well, I did that Monday morning. To no avail. They said they couldn't make any changes to my 1099R over the phone and that I needed to submit changes via mail or fax. I assured the rep I wasn't asking them to reach back and pull a bunch of money for my taxes. I just needed the 1099R to reflect that I had lived in IN for 330+ days. Yeah, it wasn't happening on that call. When I left for work, I got a message from the H&R Block lady. She said my taxes were bothering her so she put even more work in. Let me tell you, the tax prep cost was totally worth it. I'm still not able to take advantage of IN tax benes for 2020 but she got me down to owing less $100, each, for both Federal and IA and I'm getting a refund from IN. Rest Assured...when I first saw that my 1099R showed IA, I went back on MyPay to make sure it's IN. They must have fixed their State w/h page because it was much easier this time and now I can SEE that it says Indiana. But I still can't see "Single, 0".

nidena, you will be filing some part-year resident tax returns, right? W2's and 1099R's generally just specify one state even when you've lived in different states in a tax year. Is there a reason why you're stuck with what the 1099R indicates for state residency? It would bother me to sign a tax return attesting to its truth and accuracy when you know it was not accurate. But I am not a tax expert by any means. I am familiar with DFAS and MyPay, though. Your story is a "word to the wise," so to speak, that I will bear in mind if I ever change my residency state.

Thankfully, the H&R Block lady was familiar with the headache that is Military Pay. lol She filed my stuff for VERY part-time in IA and part-time in IN. Next year will be less of an issue because I'm definitely showing as living in IN, now, in MyPay. I just won't know how much is being taken out until the end of the month. Next year, I'll be able to take full advantage of this benefit: Indiana – Military retirees and surviving spouses may deduct $6,250 plus 25% of the amount of the benefits in excess of $6,250 in the taxable year 2019. The percentage will increase to 50% in 2020, 75% in 2021 and 100% for taxable years beginning after 2021. House Act No. 1010 was signed into law in August, 2019. This time, last year, I had debt on one CC, two SLs, and a car note for a total of $34,716. Right now, I have debt on two CCs, a car note, and rain gutter debt for a total of $34,631. I thought it was a funny circle.
Waiting for some dust to settle and then I'll post an update.

I was hoping everything with my house would be settled by now but, alas, it's not. My mortgage LO is still waiting to hear from them. I know the old mortgage is paid off by the new servicer (Freedom) but I don't think everything has transferred over for my refinance to my truly new company (Village Capital) which means I don't know the actual amount of the new loan. Grrr.
In any case, here's my current update:

And if I'm tracking correctly, I'll be at monthly balance payoffs with the June 1st paycheck.

I could and it shows my current balance and an overdue payment. HOWEVER, my LO said he got the payoff quote today so now we can move forward with this refi. What a pain in the butt!! A question about CC interest because I'd like to go back to using just one card again. My Visa is 8.9% w/a balance of $4500. My AmEx is 10.9% w/a balance of $1000. I've been paying the AmEx off every month for the past two months that I've been using it. The Visa had an $88 interest charge on $11,000 balance in Jan; $66 on $9,000 in Feb; $60 on $8,000 in Mar; and, likely, $40-$50 this month. I try to understand how CC interest is calculated but, despite many attempts, it's not my strong suit. At what monthly balance would the interest $ amount be the same?

ESPP transaction hit today, and I'm glad I decided not to re-enroll. since October, they have skimmed $7500 off my paycheck for this program. after the associated fees with the company that handles our programs, my take-home is $7746. I'm sorry, but $246 is not 10% of $7500. I can definitely do better with the cash in hand each paycheck, than waiting for this "benefit" twice a year. I pulled up my payoff spreadsheet to see what I'll do with it all once it lands in my checking account. I'll be paying off the remaining Citi, and then the rest will go toward the current American Express balance. I put the tree work and the golden's vet visits on that card (may as well get points, right? )

I'm used to ESPP having next day sale as an option, with no fees bc you never actually possess the shares. this was a fee to sell, and the stock had actually dropped $1/share between purchase date (yesterday) and today. so I ate a little of the proceeds from that angle, but still. hard pass on doing this again as it is set up.

Yesterday, I met with an interior designer about tackling my home office--there is literally nothing in the room except a folding table, a folding chair, and a bunch of "office" boxes. "Well, I know the Murphy Bed is going to be $2000-$3000 and then everything else added in so...$6000...$7000," is what I said. I have no freaking clue because I haven't priced everything out. That's her job. We're talking about payment schedule and stuff and she says that payments are half when ordered and half when complete. I'm thinking no problem. If we don't start until June, I can take care of half that and then have the four or five months that she says it'll take for the furniture people to deliver whatever we ordered to save up the rest. But, when I said my amount, she gave me a look and said: "It's going to be more like $15,000." I'm sure my face registered shock so she continues..."Well, with the refinishing the wood floor and the painting and the furniture..." Anyhow, long story short, she sent me this this morning: I really enjoyed meeting with you yesterday. I'm sorry that it took so long for us to get together. I wanted to touch base with you because it really sat heavy on my heart last night. I unfortunately under good conscience can not take this job. My particular business and system does not support the concept of credit card design well. My sub contractors are expensive and only take cash, the products I supply are mid to high end and I honestly don't prefer to take credit cards because I pay a hefty fee on large invoices then and as a small business, it is really hard to support those fees as well. I wouldn't feel good or in good conscious knowing that you would need to put these all under a credit card hoping to pay off in time. It goes against the integrity that I try to represent in my business. Therefore, I will refund your retainer in full. You will get notification of that today. I would suggest going to a place like Kittles which offers free design service and also offers long term 0% financing options. They offer all levels of quality and you could get the same look for thousands less than what I am able to offer you. Kittles has some very talented and seasoned designers that can also work up floor plans for you. They would be a great resource for the office and front room designs. There are actually numerous stores in the city that with offer both free design services and 0% interest offers over a long period. My rooms of service start at a minimum of 15K and usually range more in the 25-35K per room range and that would not be fair to propose when you have so many spaces to tackle. Here are some suggestions I would offer to do this project more cost effectively. Again, utilizing free design services through local furniture stores. A lot of the designers have design degrees and have been practicing for many years. I would go to Lowes to get wood 2" wood blinds. The company I represent is very expensive and I have honestly put the Lowes blinds in my own home for cost purposes. Lowes also offers built in closet systems. My carpenter is quite expensive, but finding a local handyman who is a jack of all trades would be the route I would choose to have a bookcase built into your closet. There are local people that are so much more affordable and I would suggest sourcing them to do the work, rather than hiring companies who have a lot of overhead and therefore change a great deal more. For the bathroom design, your best bet when you get closer is to hire an architect and a contractor. A designer can pick out finishes, but to make sure everything is exactly to code, those people would be your best bet to begin with. I unfortunately do not know building code and rely on my subcontractors for that aspect. For your kitchen design, I would suggest a place called Cliq Studios. They are a direct to consumer cabinet provider. You send in your drawings and they will do scale architectural drawings for free for a new kitchen design. They supply local Indiana amish made cabinets for less than Lowe's would supply. They are amazing and custom and really affordable. Again, when I re-do my own kitchen, this is who I will use to be more cost effective. Most of my income comes from the products I source and supply to my clients and I wouldn't feel right or in good conscience to do this in this particular project knowing it would be going on credit cards to pay. For that reason, this project is not going to be a good fit for us. I do apologize that you had to wait so long for our appointment. I wish you the very best and I hope you found some of the information above to be helpful and resourceful. Your credit card will show refunds 3-7 business days from today. Take care!!I thanked her for the email. So, I'm gonna tackle the office myself...didn't really want to refinish the floor to begin with because it's part office/part spare room and I'd prefer carpet. And that retainer--paid just two days ago--will go back in my account and towards other things. And I anticipate having no "old" CC debt by mid- to late May.

nidena, I read the whole message and came to your comments at the end. I have to say I am impressed with the designer for writing out all of that, and her suggestions for getting the same "look" are helpful. In contrast, my DD and DSIL put down a $15K deposit for a designer to work up plans and price everything out for them. The designer did a half-assed job, gave them a floor plan and showed them pictures of things like the stove, tile, etc. without any description of brand or other detail, and said the remodel would be almost $400,000! They were expecting maybe $100,000, and when they said that, the designer scoffed and got very pissy. There were threats of lawsuits on both sides until they agreed to just walk away from each other. The good thing is that working with that designer helped them to clarify what they were looking for, and they were able to find a contractor to do everything beautifully (modified from the designer's original plan, which would have required moving heat/AC vents and sprinklers as walls were moved). It came to a little more than $100,000, nowhere near the price quoted by the designer. They did have to do some of their own legwork, like arranging for custom window coverings, appliances, choosing kitchen cabinets and finishes, etc. So I appreciate the guidance the designer has given you, at no cost.

This was my full response to her: Thank you for that amazing email. It takes a strong sense of self and integrity to put service and conscience over dollars. As I get more and more settled in the city, and as I make more friends, if any of them or any of the Financial clients that I and my boss work with find themselves in need of a high-end designer, I will definitely recommend you.

In other awesome news, I closed on my refi yesterday. The original loan was $110,000 at 3.5% and the first payment of $652 was made in September. This one is for $110,355 at 2.75% with the first payment of $627 due June 1st. Freedom Mortgage definitely threw a monkey wrench in the process but the numbers didn't really change. If I take 30 years to pay it off, I will have saved more than $9500 total. Once I get my first statement from Village Capital, I will adjust my payment but, for now, I've set up the $627 in Web BillPay to be paid on June 1st. There's no reason I can't pay $650 or $700/mo.
ETA: I'll also be bumping up my vehicle payment amount from $409 to $500 and my rain gutter payment from $552 to $600. No reason not to get these things paid off sooner.

Chicg [2] -4/21/21, $7420 (11/7/14, 4217.34 MPT266)
Yikes, has it really been 6 months since I've posted an update? I think my last one was in October and I've been a bit overwhelmed with Covid brain and grad school since then, and not making much progress. My debt has gone up about $1K but I did end up paying $3500 for my tuition instead of a student loan, plus books, still disappointed that number isn't a little lower though. I had that snafu realizing I didn't qualify for Federal Loans with only one course at a time, was told my firm stopped their reimbursement program the week after I was accepted, so I just paid with a BT-cash out offer on my cc. I'll probably do the same for fall semester and next year do 2 courses which will qualify me for federal loans. Anyhow...very slow progress but the debt is at 0% until next year. And I'm up to $20K in savings, so I need to take the next step to invest some of that. It's not much but it's the most I've ever saved and with this crazy housing market I won't be buying anytime soon (was originally EF/down payment/sinking funds) so need to put some of it somewhere it can make some money. That will be my summer project after my current class is over. I could take some savings and pay down debt but with it being at 0%, I found myself more motivated to grow savings, maybe because of Covd? I don't know. But now that I write this out, I'm tempted to get rid of debt.
I've been reading, congrats to Sealy on the win, and welcome back Kimmykins (I've been here since '07 I think!). Nidena, that was awesome that your interior designer was so honest and gave such great tips on how to proceed.
I'll try to be more present because I really want most of this debt behind me so I can buy a car, and pay off my next class, and have no cc debt by the time I take out a student loan.

what a mess on the student loans, chicg. glad you figured out the reason and a workaround for next term. nidena - love folks with integrity, sounds like she gave you some solid direction. I hope you can use it to make that place your dream home woof, today was expensive again. planned, but still. stone materials were purchased today, via that American Express with the nice points program. I've got the cash in hand to pay it off today, but am keeping that cash til I figure out whether the painter needs a check (he's a one-man show...) or what that's going to look like. I actually pulled the $4k total painter's estimate over to my high-yield savings account so I don't screw up and use it to pay stuff down. question for the team here - when I do my next update, should I just whitewash this card with a $0/take it off the list? it is being used for the planned home improvements (when possible) and vet bills, for tracking purposes. the balance is up, down, sideways depending on the day of the week and whether I have a paycheck that week or not. I feel like it isn't an accurate indicator of the total debt paydown that way, because today the balance is $6k but next week when I get paid again, it will be $0. this card is an insurance policy to be able to dispute things if need be. just figured I'd throw the question out there. TIA for the opinions.

While I was getting out of debt, my daily spend card was never included in my balances because I paid it off every month, and it wouldn't have really given a true picture of my progress. If I were you, I'd remove that one from the race. Your mileage may vary.
