Educational integrity sacraficed to save sports and their boosters. Shameful. UNC report finds 18 years of academic fraud to keep athletes playingChapel Hill, North Carolina (CNN) -- For 18 years, thousands of students at the prestigious University of North Carolina took fake "paper classes," and advisers funneled athletes into the program to keep them eligible, according to a scathing independent report released Wednesday. "These counselors saw the paper classes and the artificially high grades they yielded as key to helping some student-athletes remain eligible," Kenneth Wainstein wrote in his report. He conducted an eight-month investigation into the scandal, which has plagued the university for nearly five years. Four employees have been fired and five more disciplined because of their roles. One other former employee had honorary status removed, Chancellor Carol Folt said Wednesday. In all, the report estimates, at least 3,100 students took the paper classes, but adds the number "very likely falls far short of the true number." What people will do for sports... It brings millions to the college every year.
Where is money to be made or lost: you will find corruption!

Professional sports will someday be separated from universities.

Ya know, that's pretty damned sad. I am pretty sure this is happening in many colleges and universities. Just a matter of being discovered and exposed.

At my college they were each assign a "buddy" so to say to help them out with their studies. So basically pair a footballer with a nerd/geek But you know the saying: the road to hell was paved with good intentions. Soon enough having their own personal mentors was not enough for the prima donnas, it was discovered (and a big scandal) that the mentor were being pressured into doing the homework/ assignment/ essays themselves and went as far as actually taking tests for them in big lecture halls. And who did the pressuring? The coach and assistant coach (among others) that did not want their special snowflake be cut from the team. Who cares if they are dum, as long as they can play

I think that the proper punishment would be for UNC to have to forfeit all tainted victories they had over Duke the past 18 years.

What surprises me is that anyone is surprised. I know. I read the OP and my first thought was: "Umm... yeah, and?"

In 1958 when I was in high school we had a big football game and the star had failed an algebra class at mid-term. The coaches were all over that math teacher to change the grade. That didn't happen and the star sat out the rest of the season. This was his senior year also.
There were a lot of very mad people but the math teacher stuck to the grade earned.
It's been happening for many years at all levels.
Personally I think the primary objective of a university is academia.
