As far as leaving kids in stores, I left my ~12yo son in JCPenny once, on purpose. He had a habit of wandering away without telling me where he was going and I'd been fussing at him about it for years. That day, I'd spent about 20 minutes looking for him and waiting for him to show up, and I was fed up, so I left him. I went a couple stores down the strip, but I moved my car so he would know I'd left him. I was only gone about 15 minutes and he was just inside the front entrance, almost frantic, when I came back. Yep, he'd looked in the parking lot for my car. That was the last time he just wandered off in a store. That is hilarious, and something I would definitely try! DS10 has a habit of wandering off, but this time he told me he was using the restroom while I was at customer service, then when I was done with customer service I just walked off without thinking.

Wait, I'm trying to follow this, you have step kids and they have a brother whose mom is not their mom, so the dad has been married twice before, is that right? This is his 3rd marriage?
Pat - the child is her stepkids' half brother from their mothers second marriage if I understand correctly.

Wow, I just can't understand families like that, would think it would be so disruptive, but then I'm old. Um. Couple with kids divorces. Each partner remarried. There is a new child born in one of the families. How.is this complicated? This isn't 6 kids with 4 dad's and 3 moms...

And she's our own flesh & blood fully, so we cant really sell her to the gypsies.
